#20 Minutewomen Defeated By #2 Boston College In Opener, 20-9

Charlotte Wilmoth led the UMass offense with four goals while Fiona McGowan added a goal and three assists.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The no. 20-ranked University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team fell on the road at no. 2-ranked Boston College in the season opener on Friday afternoon at the Fish Field House, 20-9. Charlotte Wilmoth led the UMass offense with four goals on five shots while Fiona McGowan added a goal and three assists.
Wilmoth tied things up with her first of two goals in the opening quarter as McGowan connected with the senior for the season's first goal at 10:02 to tie at 1-1. After the Eagles scored two in a row, McGowan and Wilmoth connected once again to make it a one goal game at 3-2 with 5:27 left in the first.
Boston College strung together eight consecutive goals to make it an 11-2 contest before Wilmoth netted her third of the day to secure a first half hat trick off an assist from Skylar Simmonds with 2:00 to go in the first half. Kassidy Morris found the back of the net 40 seconds later off an assist from McGowan to make it an 11-4 game. McGowan's third assist of the game moved her into a tie for ninth-most all-time at UMass in career assists with 74.
The two teams matched each other goal for goal in the third quarter with BC striking first to make it a 14-4 game with just over 10 minutes to go in the quarter. Simmonds answered with her first goal in a UMass uniform with 3:03 remaining before Wilmoth netted her fourth of the day in the final seconds of the third to bring the Minutewomen within nine at 15-6.
McGowan broke through for her first goal of the new season 37 seconds in to the fourth quarter to bring the score to 15-7 before BC netted three consecutive goals. Lil Hancock picked up her first collegiate goal with 5:03 to go while Lauren Tolve added one with 2:31 remaining. Tolve finished the day with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Catrina Tobin finished with seven saves in goal for the Minutewomen while Boston College outshot UMass 35 to 20 on the day.
The Minutewomen put 15 of their 20 shot attempts on target with Wilmoth's five leading the way while Morris, Hancock, McGowan, and Simmonds each finished with a pair on frame.
UMass plays its home opener at Garber Field against Brown on Saturday, Feb. 17 at noon.
