#22 Women’s Lacrosse Defeated By Brown In Home Opener, 15-14

AMHERST, Mass - The no. 22-ranked University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-14 decision to Brown in their home opener to on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.
Redshirt sophomore Kassidy Morris led the Minutewomen with a career best seven points on four goals and three assists. Graduate student Fiona McGowan added a hat trick and a pair of assists.
Brown goalie Claire Mahoney finished with eight saves in the win as UMass outshot the Bears 33-27 (22-18 in shots on goal).
How It Happened
After Brown jumped out to a 3-1 lead, the Minutewomen came storming back with four unanswered goals, getting tallies from Audra Tosone, Charlotte Wilmoth, Skylar Simmonds and Morris to take a 5-3 lead into the second quarter.
Brown then went on a run, stringing together five unanswered goals in the second quarter while shutting UMass out the remainder of the half.
Coming out of the break, the Bears added another tally for a 9-5 lead with 12:41 remaining in the quarter. Morris picked out Lil Hancock for her second career goal before netting her second on the day to bring UMass within a pair at 10:37. Following a pair of Brown goals, McGowan potted her first of the day while Ava Connaughton scored her first collegiate goal on a player-up opportunity. Brown scored one more goal before the quarter ended to hold a 12-9 lead going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, McGowan and Connaughton each scored their second goals of the game, while Morris completed the hat trick to pull within one as Brown clung to a 14-13 lead with just under five minutes remaining. Morris would finish out her career day by netting her fourth goal to tie the game at the 3:52 mark. Brown reclaimed the lead at 2:25 and held on for the 15-14 win.
On the defensive side of the field, goalie Catrina Tobin turned aside three shots for the Minutewomen while Audra Tosone scooped up a pair of ground balls and had a team-high two caused turnovers. Jordan Dean also had a game-high 13 draw controls in the loss.
The Minutewomen are idle until Tuesday, February 27th, when they return to Garber Field to take on Holy Cross in a 3 p.m. matchup on ESPN+.
