Women’s Lacrosse Rally Comes Up Short Against Holy Cross, 12-10

Caroline Whelan finished with her first career hat trick while Jordan Dean secured 17 draw controls on the afternoon.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team rallied from down four goals to take a 10-9 lead before falling to Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field, 12-10. Jordan Dean finished with 17 draw controls while Caroline Whelan recorded her first career hat trick.
Kassidy Morris finished with three goals on the day with Charlotte Wilmoth adding two goals and two assists for four points. UMass finished with a 22-3 advantage on the draw and outshot the Crusaders 37-26 with 27 of the Minutewomen's shots coming on goal.
Holy Cross scored four unanswered goals to start the game with Lauren Drillock netting two in the opening 10:51 of play. Whelan broke through with the first of her two goals in the first half to put UMass on the board with 3:23 to go in the first prior to the Crusaders adding their fifth to lead 5-1 at the break.
Whelan put home her second goal of the day just under two minutes into the second quarter to trim the Holy Cross advantage to four goals. Skylar Simmonds jumpstarted a stretch of four unanswered goals for the Minutewomen with 10:55 to go as she scored her third of the year. Wilmoth followed with her first of the day before Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw netted her first in a UMass uniform with 26 seconds left in the half to make it a 7-5 game at the break in favor of Holy Cross.
Wilmoth capped off the stretch of four straight for the Minutewomen with her second of the game and seventh of the year before two straight Crusaders goals gave Holy Cross a 9-6 advantage with 5:25 to play in the third. Kassidy Morris scored three of the next four goals for the Minutewomen, including two in a row to bring UMass within a goal before Whelan's third goal make it a 9-9 game with 2:06 left in the third.
Morris' third and final goal gave UMass its first lead of the day at 10-9 with 10:19 to play before Holy Cross tied it up and scored two more down the stretch to bring the game to a 12-10 final.
The Minutewomen begin a three-game road trip on Saturday at LIU for an 11 a.m. start before heading to Hanover, N.H. to take on Dartmouth on Tuesday, March 5 at 4 p.m.
