Women’s Lacrosse Pulls Away For 15-6 Win At LIU

Kassidy Morris led a UMass offense that outscored 10 straight goals to end the game with a career-high five goals.
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team pulled away from LIU for a 15-6 win on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen scored 10 straight after trailing 6-5 with 6:35 to go in the second to build a lead of as many as nine with 2:59 remaining in the game.
Kassidy Morris posted her third consecutive hat trick as the redshirt sophomore finished with a career-high five goals on nine shots with seven on target. Freshman Ava Connaughton picked up her first career hat trick and added an assist for four points while Skylar Simmonds added four points of her own on two goals and two assists. Fiona McGowan tallied a game-high three assists.
Jordan Dean paced UMass on the draw with 14 draw controls to lead a squad that finished with a 21-6 advantage in the circle. Catrina Tobin helped the UMass defense hold LIU without a goal for the final 36:35 of play while coming up with a season-high nine saves. UMass forced eight caused turnovers on the day with Kelly Brown, Lauren Tolve, and Layton Nass each coming up with a pair.
Charlotte Wilmoth scored the first of two goals to open the scoring for the Minutewomen off the assist from Connaughton just under three minutes into the game. McGowan's first from Simmonds put UMass on top 2-1 before back-to-back goals from Morris and Tolve gave UMass a 4-3 advantage heading into the second.
Connaughton's first of three goals put UMass on top 5-4 with 10:59 to go in the second before the Sharks strung together two consecutive goals to go ahead 6-5 with 6:35 to go in the half. Wilmoth started UMass' stretch of 10 consecutive goals off the assist from McGowan before Morris scored to help the Minutewomen take a 7-6 lead into the halftime break.
McGowan connected with Connaughton again to start the second half before Simmonds scored followed by two straight for Morris to put UMass ahead 11-6 after three. Connaughton completed her hat trick with 8:47 to go to give UMass a 13-6 advantage with Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw making it a 14-6 game at the 5:54 mark. Morris' fifth and final goal of the day came with 2:59 remaining and gave her a team-leading 13 for the season.
UMass continues its three-game road trip on Tuesday, March 5 at Dartmouth before beginning Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, March 9 at George Mason.
