Massachusett Men's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker To #8/6 Army, 13-12

ATLANTA, Ga.- The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team came up short against #8/6 ranked Army 13-12, at Sliverbacks Park on Saturday afternoon. UMass goes to 0-1 while Army gets their first win of the season to improve to 1-0.

Georgia native Grant Breyo led the Gorillas with a hat trick while Anthony Sericolo scored a pair. Mike Tobin and Carter Castillo each had a pair of assists in the loss. 

On the defensive side of the field, Senior All-American goalie Matt Knote turned aside 16 shots while Freshman defensive midfielder Blaise New led the team in caused turnovers with two. FOGO Caleb Hammett went 8-for-28 from the faceoff X.

Army was led by attackmen Reese Burek (2g,2a) and Jacob Morin (3g), while getting seven saves from goalie Matt Chess and 21 faceoff wins from Will Coletti.

Anthony Sericolo kicked off scoring in the 2024 season, giving UMass an early lead at 13:46. Army responded a minute later to tie the game.

Breyo netted his first of the game at 9:15 before Army went on a 4-0 run, taking a 5-2 lead at 6:48. 

UMass would go on a run of their own, getting goals from Mason Bregman before the half,  as well as Sericolo and Brady Hoff to open the half. Captain Mike Tobin picked up a pair of assists as UMass tied the game at five a piece with 10:42 in the third.

UMass and Army traded goals to tie the game at 7-7 to end the third, including freshman Matthew Cargiulo's first collegiate goal. Breyo potted his second while Conor Foley and Caelin Lewis each scored their first goals in the maroon and white. 

To open up the fourth quarter, UMass scored three unanswered, leading 10-7 with 10:18 remaining in the game. Army would reclaim the lead at 5:47 after responding to UMass with four of their own.

After Shane O'Leary tied the game, Army's Bailey O'Connor put Army back up and the Black Knights would go on to win 13-12.

UMass is back in action next Saturday, February 17, for the home opener against UMass Lowell. The opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
