Native of South Africa joins the Minutewomen for the 2025 spring season.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis and head coach Juancarlos Nunez announced the addition of Owethu Makhanya for the 2025 spring season.
Makhanya hails from Johannesburg, South Africa, and has been training at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
"We are so happy to welcome Owethu onto our team," said Nunez. "From our initial conversations we could sense that she would be a great fit within our team on and off the court. She is an experienced competitor and hungry to continue getting better. We can't wait to work with her and help her continue to grow and develop during her time at UMass."
Makhanya is an experienced junior player who has competed at the top junior events across several continents. Most recently, Makhanya has been training at the IMG Academy
" I chose UMass because out of the schools I visited I felt an immediate connection with people," said Makhanya. "I could feel a sense of community and attention to detail was paid towards not only me but to the rest of my future teammates and students on the campus. In which i could see myself thrive athletically and academically and excited what this new adventure brings for me!"
Makhanya will come to Amherst in January ahead of the current season.
"We are thrilled to have Owethu join us in January," said assistant coach Hannah McColgan. "We are looking forward to seeing the passion and energy she brings daily. It's going to be an exciting spring and we're happy to welcome Owethu to team 49. Go UMass!"
