Swimming & Diving Fall To Boston College In Season Opener

Sammy Quigg placed first in two events, while registering a pool record in the 50 freestyle.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team fell to Boston College on Saturday at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. The Minutewomen dropped their dual meet against the Eagles, 156-142, while the Minutemen faltered, 186-114.
 
Junior Sammy Quigg secured two first-place finishes on the day, while swimming to a time of 20.34 in the 50 freestyle, marking a new Joseph R. Rogers, Jr., Pool record. His time beat the previous pool record by 0.01 second held by a Boston University swimmer from last season (20.35). Quigg's time also met a new dual meet record in the event, which Quigg held with a time of 20.38 during the 2023-24 season.
 
Women's Swimming & Diving
 
The Minutewomen totaled 25 top-three finishes on the day to go along, while collecting six gold medals.
 
Senior Anna Kwon swam a time of 1:56.39 in the 200 freestyle to take second, while freshman Hannah Schoenauer followed with a career-best time of 1:56.86 to claim third to kick off the individual events. Graduate student Bri Williams finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.14.
 
In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Lindsay Burbage touched the wall first (1:04.01) with freshman Kendall Gilbert placing third (1:08.25). Schoenauer secured her first gold medal of her career with a time of 2:06.78 in the 200 butterfly.
 
Graduate student Ashley Calderon took third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.56, while sophomore Beren Cakiroglu was third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.70. Senior Lauren Stott (2:07.52) and Williams earned second and third in the 200 backstroke, respectively, while Burbage (2:23.70) and freshman Maria Grishaeva (2:27.05) followed with their own second- and third-place finishes, as well.
 
Kwon registered a time of 5:14.08 in the 500 freestyle to claim third for UMass, as Calderon (56.45) and freshman Elizabeth Lahmann (58.24) had a one-two finish in the 100 butterfly event. Sophomore Diya Ackerman-Vallala concluded the individual events with a silver medal in the 200 individual medley, swimming a time of 2:11.06.
 
In the relays, the team of Williams, Burbage, Calderon and Cakiroglu combined for a time of 1:46.14 in the 200 medley relay to finish first, while team of senior Hannah McIver, Ackerman-Vallala, Kwon and Lahmann swam into third with a time of 1:50.35. The 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Cakiroglu, Schoenauer, Williams and Calderon grabbed second with a time of 1:38.47.
 
Men's Swimming & Diving
 
The Minutemen earned six first-place finishes of their own and added 16 top-three finishes.
 
Sophomore Jude Boukarroum kicked off the men's individual events with a third-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle with time of 9:55.98. Sophomores Cole Brooks (1:44.50) and Alonso Montori (1:44.67) placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 freestyle.
 
Senior Beau Bengston earned the bronze in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.70, while freshman Nate Derby swam into third with a time of 58.50 in the 100 breaststroke event. Sophomore Aydin Erkan picked up the gold medal in the 200 butterfly, recording a time of 1:52.51.
 
Junior Sammy Quigg claimed a dual meet record and a pool record in the 50 freestyle with his time of 20.34 to place first, followed by fellow classmate Aidan Shepston in third with a time of 21.16. Quigg, then, collected his second gold medal of the day after swimming a time of 45.24 in the 100 freestyle.
 
The 500 freestyle saw Boukarroum take second with a time of 4:49.67, before senior Grant Beebe clocked a time of 50.69 in the 100 butterfly for a second-place finish of his own. Freshman Chase Keeler rounded out the individual events with a third-place time of 2:00.76 in the 200 individual medley.
 
During the relay events, the team of Bengston, senior Derby, Beebe and Quigg swam a combined time of 1:33.34 in the 200 medley relay to take first place. In the 200 freestyle relay, Beebe, graduate student Juan Montori, Shepston and Quigg, earned second with a time of 1:24.51.  
 
On The Boards
The Minutewomen swept the podium in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. In the one-meter, freshman Danielle Guerin (260.63) sat atop the podium with fellow classmate Khrystyna Yaremyn (236.85) in second and junior Shreeya Sinha (232.95) in third.
 
During the three-meter dive, Sinha claimed the gold with a total of 259.50. Junior Salem Howes picked up the silver with a score of 245.78, as Guerin secured the bronze with a six-dive total of 241.80.
 
For the Minutemen, junior Andrew Bell secured first place in both the one-meter and three-meter. In the one-meter event, Bell had a score of 346.28, while recording a six-dive total of 337.28 in the three-meter.  
 
Up Next
 
Both the men's and women's swim team will return to the pool for the Justin Jennings Invitational, hosted by Colgate, in Hamilton, New York, on Friday, October 11, through Saturday, October 12. Friday's events begin at 4 p.m., with Saturday kicking off at 10 a.m.
