Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Richmond In A-10 Title Game, 20-13

RICHMOND, Va. – The top-seeded and no. 13-nationally ranked Massachusetts women's lacrosse team fell to no. 2-seed and no. 22-nationally ranked Richmond on Sunday in the Atlantic 10 Championship, 20-13. The Minutewomen (16-2 Overall) await their NCAA Tournament fate with the selection show set for 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
Richmond (16-3 Overall) scored the game's opening three goals to jump out to a 3-0 lead with 10:19 left on the clock in the first. UMass bounced back with two consecutive goals to trim the deficit to a goal, with Kassidy Morris finding Charlotte Wilmoth for the first Minutewoman goal with 9:13 left in the first. Gina Carroll recorded one of her five first half saves on a Richmond free position attempt with 7:46 to go, before the ball was secured by Audra Tosone to set up Hannah Heller for her ninth of the season.
Kylee Bowen finished the day with three goals and scored her first with just over five remaining in the first to make it a 4-3 game in favor of Richmond. Alex Finn capped off the quarter with her 41st of the season to bring UMass within a goal once again.
The Minutewomen took their first lead of the day with two straight goals to open the second, beginning with Audra Tosone's second of the season. Tosone caused a turnover in Richmond's offensive end, secured a ground ball, and went coast-to-coast to tie things up at 5-5 under 90 seconds into the second. Bowen added her second goal off an assist from Fiona McGowan to give UMass its first lead at 6-5 with 10:16 left in the half.
Both teams traded goals over the next nine minutes, with Wilmoth and Finn scoring for UMass, before Richmond scored twice in 40 seconds to end the first half and take a 9-8 lead into the halftime break.
The Spiders outscored the Minutewomen 7-2 in the third quarter to take a 16-10 lead into the final frame. Bowen completed her hat trick and brought UMass back within a pair at 11-9 with 6:44 to go before Richmond scored five of the final six goals in the quarter. Richmond's scoring streak continued into the fourth quarter and concluded at six consecutive goals before Finn found McGowan with 6:37 to go to make it an 18-11 contest.
McGowan scored her first goal of the afternoon with 6:37 to go off a Finn assist before Amy Moreau added the final two UMass goals as she finished with the hat trick.
