AMHERST, Mass. - The no. 16-ranked Massachusetts women's lacrosse team begins NCAA Tournament play with its first-ever matchup against Johns Hopkins on Friday. The Minutewomen and the Blue Jays begin action with a 2 p.m. draw at the SU Soccer Field in Syracuse, N.Y.
Regular Season Champs
UMass won its 12th consecutive A-10 regular season title and 15th in program history after finishing the regular season with a 9-0 mark in league play. The Minutewomen began the run with a regular season title in 2011 and has claimed 11 of the last 12 titles outright.
Tournament History
The 2023 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship marks the third consecutive appearance for the Minutewomen after earned an at-large bid a season ago following an automatic bid in 2021. The tournament is the 15th all-time appearance for the program with the last win coming by way of a 13-7 victory over Colorado in 2017.
Major Award Winners
UMass claimed four major Atlantic 10 awards last week and landed 14 across the all-league teams. Fiona McGowan was named the A-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Amy Moreau earned the A-10 Midfielder of the Year nod, Audra Tosone was tabbed the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Jana Drummond earned A-10 Co-Coach of the Year honors.
Fiona's Finds
Fiona McGowan ranks fifth nationally in assists with 69 and is sixth among DI leaders in assists per game at 2.61. McGowan also ranks seventh in the nation in both points (90) and poinst per game (5.00).
Top-25 Rankings
The Minutewomen fell to no. 16 in the latest IWLCA/ILWomen Top-25 poll after a defeat to Richmond in the A-10 Championship game. UMass climbed from 24 to 20 after defeating A-10 foe Richmond in a top-25 matchup during the regular season and was as high as no. 13 in the poll.
On Target
Alex Finn leads the nation in shot percentage at .667 to help the Minutewomen rank 10th nationally as a team in the category at .481.
UMass Among National Team Leaders
The Minutewomen rank third nationally in ground balls per game at 20.00 and are top-five among DI teams in assists per game (4th, 8.22) and scoring margin (5th, 7.50). Defensively, UMass holds the nation's sixth-best scoring defense and averages 10.17 caused turnovers a game to rank 12th nationally.
First Time Matchup
Friday's contest marks the first time in program history that UMass has played a game against Johns Hopkins. UMass assistant coach Aurora Cordingley played lacrosse at Johns Hopkins from 2018-21 and finished her career sixth in assists, ninth in points, and 10th in goals. Cordingley concluded her collegiate career at Maryland in 2022, where she was tabbed the Big Ten Attacker of the Year and a Tewaarton Award Finalist.
Getting Defensive
Audra Tosone ranked seventh among DI leaders in caused turnovers per game at 2.39 while her 3.06 ground balls per game ranks 10th nationally. Tosone's 44 caused turnovers this season is second-most in a single season at UMass while the 75 for her career is fifth most all-time by a Minutewoman.
Four-Time DPoW
Audra Tosone was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week four times during the regular season. Tosone set a new program record with seven caused turnovers in a single game and secured seven ground balls in a win over Duquesne.
Most Points Since 2021
Fiona McGowan recorded 10 points on four goals and six assists in a win over George Mason in the regular season finale. McGowan's 10 points marked the most in a single game by an A-10 player since February of 2021.
On The Draw
Sophomore Jordan Dean continues her move up the draw control rankings in the UMass record book. Dean's 186 career draw controls ranks fifth-most all-time at UMass while her 135 this season is fourth-most in a single season by a Minutewoman. Dean also ranks 11th among Division I leaders in draw controls per game with 7.50.
IWLCA All-Region
Six Minutewomen earned IWLCA All-Northeast Region honors as announced by the IWLCA on Thursday afternoon. Jordan Dean, Fiona McGowan, and Audra Tosone were each named to the first-team while Alex Finn, Hannah Heller, and Amy Moreau were named to the second-team.
