Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Edged At Richmond, 13-12

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse closed a four-goal deficit to one with just over two minutes to play in the fourth, but was unable to complete the comeback, falling 13-12 at Richmond on Saturday at Robins Stadium. Both teams sit at 6-4 overall, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 following the matchup.
Senior Mike Tobin paced the Maroon & White with five points, posting a hat trick for a second straight game and adding two assists. Graduate student Gabriel Procyk, redshirt sophomore Shane O'Leary and freshman Zach Auble each had two goals on the day, while eight additional Gorillas had one point apiece. Caleb Hammett was 17-for-29 over X and corralled nine ground balls.
For Richmond, Dalton Young logged seven points with two goals and five assists, Luke Grayum and Joe Sheridan each added hat tricks, O'Neil scored twice and Lance Madonna posted a goal and two assists.
Junior Grant Breyo quickly converted the lone man-up opportunity for either team off a feed from senior Anthony Sericolo just 23 seconds into the contest, while Tobin and Procyk helped Massachusetts to a 3-1 advantage midway through the opening frame.
Sheridan capped the first quarter scoring and opened the second with another, part of a 4-0 run that helped the Spiders build a 5-3 lead. Auble broke up the scoreless stretch for UMass with the first of his collegiate career from senior Carter Castillo with 5:47 remaining in the period, but Richmond out-scored the Maroon & White, 3-2 before the intermission to head into halftime with a two-goal edge at 8-6.
The teams traded goals three times in the third before the Spiders widened the gap to four with the first two tallies of the fourth, making it a 13-9 margin with 9:27 left.
UMass netted three goals in a 1:22 stretch, with Tobin competing his hat trick with a highlight reel assist on O'Leary's second of the day sandwiched in between. The Spiders won the ensuing faceoff, however, and held on for the final 2:02 of the contest for the one-goal victory.
Richmond ended the day with a 47-31 advantage in shots and went 15-for-17 on clears with the Gorillas going 20-for-22. Massachusetts picked up 32 ground balls to the Spiders' 29.
UMass goalkeeper Matt Knote had seven saves in the contest and Zach Vigue stopped five.
The Gorillas will be back in action next Saturday, April 15, when the squad will play host to St. Bonaventure on Garber Field at 1 p.m.
