Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Upends St. Bonaventure, 14-3

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse briefly trailed 1-0 at the start of the contest before scoring the next eight straight to help the squad to a 14-3 win over St. Bonaventure at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Gorillas move to 7-4 on the year, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies drop to 1-11, 0-3 in conference action.
 
Redshirt sophomore Mason Bregman led the attack for the Maroon & White with a career-best five points on four goals and an assist. Graduate student Gabriel Procyk dished a career high four assists and added his 10th goal of the season, extending his goal scoring streak to 10 straight contests. Senior Mike Tobin had a four-point day, posting a hat trick for a third straight game to go along with an assist. Senior Carter Castillo was the fourth Gorilla with a multi-point performance, logging a goal and two assists. Faceoff specialist Caleb Hammett went 10-for-15 (.667) over X with six ground balls and netted his first collegiate goal.
 
For St. Bonaventure, Sean Westley provided all three tallies and Mark Belles picked up an assist. Quinn Nolan registered seven ground balls.
 
After Belles set up Westley for the opening goal of the contest 14 seconds in, UMass proceeded to go on an 8-0 run before Westley added his second of the day with 1:23 remaining in the second quarter. Bregman then closed out the half with a buzzer beater to give the Gorillas a 9-2 advantage at the intermission.
 
Procyk and junior Grant Breyo expanded the advantage to 11-2 with goals at 10:21 and 9:28 of the third quarter before Bregman picked up his fourth of the afternoon with 12 seconds remaining in the frame.
 
Freshman Aiden Drunsic picked a corner for his third of the season in the opening minute of the fourth and Castillo finished off a dish from Procyk at 7:49 before the Bonnies capped the scoring with 1:06 to play.
 
UMass out-shot St. Bonaventure 66-19 on the day and collected 35 ground balls to the Bonnies' 11. The Gorillas were 0-for-5 in extra-man opportunities while successfully killing off all three man-down situations. Massachusetts' clear game was near perfect on the day as the squad went 18-for-19.
 
In goal for the Gorillas, senior Matt Knote logged eight saves, while Tyler Bluse played the final 3:58 and stopped one shot. Cristofero Cucciuffo had 22 saves for St. Bonaventure.
 
UMass will be back in action next Saturday, April 22, when the squad will travel to Saint Joseph's for a 3:30 p.m. Atlantic 10 matchup against the Hawks.
