Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Secures Atlantic 10 Tournament Berth With 13-9 Win Over Hobart

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse secured a berth to the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a 13-9 win over Hobart on Senior Night on Garber Field on Friday. With the win the Gorillas improve to 8-5 on the year, 3-2 in the A-10, while Hobart ends the season at 5-8 and 1-4 in conference action.
Once again UMass spread the love offensively with 10 individuals combining for 13 goals. Mike Tobin paced the pack with a hat trick and two assists for five points, redshirt sophomore Mason Bregman had two goals and an assist for three points and senior Will Abbott contributed three points (1g, 2a). Redshirt sophomore Caleb Hammett picked up 12 ground balls and won 14 of 23 faceoffs (.609).
For Hobart, John Herlihy posted a hat trick, Chad Bach scored twice and Anthony Dattellas and John Jude Considine added two points apiece, each with a goal and an assist.
The Statesmen began the scoring at the 13:04 mark of the first before Tim Hoynes put the Gorillas on the board with 9:55 to go in the opening quarter. Dattellas converted a man-up opportunity for Hobart at 9:11 as the squad regained the lead a 2-1, but Abbott's response with 7:41 on the clock began a 4-1 run for Massachusetts. Bach capped the high scoring first with a goal at the 1:08 mark to bring the Statesmen back within one of the Gorillas, 5-4.
Hobart stretched the run to 3-0 with the first two goals of the second quarter, regaining a one-goal edge at 6-5. Tobin responded with two tallies in a 32 second span to put UMass back on top before Herlihy knotted things up at 7-7 for the Statesmen.
With just eight seconds remaining in the half, senior Carter Castillo sent Massachusetts to the locker room with a 8-7 lead, finishing off a feed from Tobin at the doorstep.
Hobart opened the second half scoring 24 seconds in, but UMass' defense would hold the Statemen to just one more goal the rest of the way. Bregman's long-distance rocket put the Gorillas on top for good with 13:36 remaining in the third. Tobin then completed his hat trick off a pass from Bregman with nine seconds to go in the frame.
Shane O'Leary expanded the Massachusetts lead to three at 11-8 with 11:55 to play in the contest with Tobin picking up the helper.
Herlihy capped the scoring for Hobart with 5:52 on the clock before sophomore John Krisch and freshman Zach Auble added UMass' 12th and 13th tallies of the evening.
The Gorillas edged the Statesmen in shots, 42-41 and collected a season-best 40 ground balls to Hobart's 26. Both teams went 2-for-5 in extra-man opportunities.
Senior Matt Knote finished the contest with 16 saves, including 11 second half stops, while Statesmen netminder Elhanan Wilson had 10 saves.
UMass will next travel to Richmond, Virginia for the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which begins with the conference semifinal matchups on Thursday, May 4, at Robins Stadium.
