Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Richmond, 15-8, In A-10 Semifinal

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse saw its 2023 season come to a close on Thursday night, falling to Richmond, 15-8 at Robins Stadium in the teams' Atlantic 10 Semifinal matchup. UMass ends the year at 8-6, while the Spiders advance to the conference title game at 10-4.
Senior Mike Tobin finished the contest with four points, posting a hat trick and an assist. Redshirt sophomore Shane O'Leary scored twice and senior Will Abbott had a goal and an assist. Redshirt sophomore Caleb Hammett won 15 of 27 faceoffs and picked up 11 ground balls.
Dalton Young paced Richmond with eight points on five goals and three assists, Lance Madonna recorded a hat trick and an assist for four points, and Luke Grayum, Aidan O'Neil and Derek Madonna contributed two goals apiece.
The Spiders opened the scoring with the first two goals of the contest before graduate student Gabriel Procyk cut UMass' deficit in half at 2-1. Richmond, however, responded with two more tallies to finish the opening quarter with a 4-1 lead.
The Gorillas opened the second quarter with a 3-1 run, but after Tobin's goal at the 6:13 mark that brought Massachusetts within one at 5-4, the Spiders scored the next eight straight. Young's tally with 6:07 to go in the third capped the stretch that helped Richmond build a 13-4 advantage.
Tobin capped his hat trick with a man-up goal from Abbott with 5:10 remaining in the third and O'Leary gave the Gorillas back-to-back tallies at the 3:56 mark.
In the fourth, Lance Madonna scored twice for the Spiders, bookending goals from O'Leary and Abbott.
Richmond out-shot UMass, 45-30 and led in ground balls, 27-26. The Gorillas converted their lone man-up opportunity, while the Spiders were 1-for-2.
Senior Matt Knote finished with 16 saves for Massachusetts and Zach Vigue stopped 11 for Richmond.
