Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball welcomes the University of Hartford on Tuesday, April 25, before hosting Siena College on Wednesday, April 26, at Earl Lorden Field. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+ at 3 p.m.
The Minutemen are 6-25 overall on the season, including 1-11 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, after a weekend series sweep that went Saint Joseph's way.
Hartford holds a 2-28 record and are coming off a series loss at Maine over the weekend. The Hawks are 2-19 overall on the road and are currently on a 14-game losing streak. Siena sits at 9-31 overall and are coming off. 1-2 loss in the weekend series at Iona, falling in game on and two, before taking game three form the Gaels, 19-14. On the road, the Saints are 5-26 overall.
Recap in a Minute
Saint Joseph's swept the series over UMass last weekend, winning 5-3, 12-3 and 7-3 in game one, two and three, respectively.
In game three, Carter Hanson and Justin Blumenthal registered two hits on the afternoon, while six Minutemen tallied on each. Will MacLean, Hanson and Blumenthal all recorded a RBI, with Kevin Skagerlind, Hanson and Sam Hill tallied one run apiece.
All-Time vs. Hartford
The Minutemen and Hawks will meet for the 37th time in program history, with UMass holding a 24-12 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams first met on April 10, 1986 for a doubleheader. Massachusetts claimed both games with a 14-9 win and a 6-1 victory. UMass and Hartford last met on April 30, 2019, when the Hawks earned the 5-4 triumph in 10 innings.
UMass last defeated Hartford 11-4 on May 1, 2018.
All-Time vs. Siena
The Minutemen and Saints are meeting for the 32nd time on Wednesday, as UMass has the advantage in the all-time series, 17-14. Siena won 3-1 at a neutral site in the teams' first meeting on April 1, 1978. The two programs' last meeting was on April 27, 2022, when the Minutemen came away with a tight 15-14 victory.
It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 19 homeruns in 31 games played, from eight Minutemen. Hanson leads the production with five, followed closely by Nolan Tichy and MacLean with four. Luttazi recorded two, so far, while Zack Zaetta, Mike Gervasi, Hill and Ryan Coleman have one apiece.
Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively. Gervasi had his first homer in game one of the Penn series, as Tichy garnered his first of the season in game three at Penn. Zaetta registered his first homer in game one at Saint Joseph's.
On A Roll…
Nine Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. MacLean sits atop the leaderboard with 12 while Luttazi has three games. Seven Minutemen are riding a one-contest streak. MacLean's current 12-game streak is the team's longest, while Hanson holds the second longest at nine, before that came to an end.
MacLean is on a current 15-game reached base streak, as Luttazi follows with nine. Skagerlind recorded six straight games with a reached base streak, while Zaetta has five. Tichy and Gervasi both have two games with a reached base streak, with six Minutemen holding a one-game streak. MacLean holds the teams' longest streak with a total of 15 games. Zaetta (13) and Tichy's (10) consecutive game totals are the teams' second and third longest, respectively, with MacLean's being the longest current streak.
[Multi]ple Games
UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 59. Luttazi leads the production with 12, which included three three-hit contests and one four hit game. MacLean follows with 10 apiece, as Hanson and Zaetta registered nine. Tichy totaled five, including two four-hit contests. Gervasi and Michael Toth tallied three apiece, while Hill, Skagerlind and Blumenthal tallied two each. Chris Pearsons and Jacob Sloss all contributed one each to UMass' multi-hit total.
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 29 multi-RBI games, led by Hanson with six. Luttazi follows with five, including on three-run contest, as Tichy has had four games. Gervasi and MacLean have three, while both Zaetta and Skagerlind have garnered two multi-RBI contests. Four other Minutemen have tallied one game each, with a three-run contest from Sloss.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
Massachusetts heads to St. Bonaventure, New York, for a three-game A-10 weekend series with St. Bonaventure on Friday, April 28 through Sunday, April 30. Friday is slated for a 3 p.m. start on ESPN+, while both Saturday and Sunday's contests will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday will be streamed on ESPN3, and Sunday will be streamed on ESPN+.
