Baseball Falls In Close 5-3 Contest To Central Michigan

The Minutemen celebrate their seniors on Saturday, May 16, taking on Central Michigan for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell in a close 5-3 contest to Central Michigan on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
UMass moved to 17-28 overall, and 12-19 in the Mid-American Conference, while Central Michigan improved to 23-28 overall and 12-19 in the league.
Vance Bonior, Gavin O'Brien, Ty Fox and Jack Beverly all had two hits each, with O'Brien recording a double on the day. Bonior crossed the plate twice with Fox scoring one run. O'Brien and Reece McCarthy both tallied on RBI apiece.
Central Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the second, scoring on an RBI double. In the top of the fourth, the Chippewas led off with a solo home run over the left field hedges to pull ahead 2-0.
Massachusetts cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the bottom half of the fourth. Bonior singled to right center field, before O'Brien doubled to left field with Bonior sliding into home.
The Minutemen knotted up the game, 2-2, in the fifth inning. Fox led off with a walk, as Matt Travisano followed with a single to short. Beverly laid down a bunt single to load up the bases. Sam Hill grounded into a double play, but Fox headed home on the play to add another run for UMass.
A bases loaded walk in the seventh allowed Central Michigan to score and take a 3-2 lead. The Chippewas added two runs in the top of the eighth with a two-run homer to left field, extending their lead to 5-2.
UMass tacked on a run in the bottom half of the frame to make it a 5-3 game. Bonior started off with a single, before O'Brien hit a single of his own. Bonior then stole third and came across home plate on a sacrifice fly by McCarthy.
The Minutemen held off Central Michigan, retiring the side, in the final inning, but the Chippewas were able to come out on top, 5-3.
Callen Powers (4-5) had the loss for Massachusetts, tossing 6.1 innings with three runs on seven hits, four walks and four strikeouts on the afternoon.
Hayden Bailey (3-4) received the win for Central Michigan, allowing two runs on six this, two walks and dealing five strikeouts in seven complete innings. Jack Potteiger earned the save, giving up a run, three hits, no walks and striking out one in two innings of work.
Massachusetts closes out the season with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 16, starting at 11 a.m., against Central Michigan on ESPN+. Seven Minutemen will be honored at the prior to the start of game two of the twin bill during the senior ceremony.
