Minutemen Fall in Extras at Hartford, 5-4

April 30, 2019 | Baseball

Massachusetts rallies late from four runs down but Hawks walk off in 10th inning

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Massachusetts baseball eliminated a 4-0 deficit to force extra innings, but Hartford's Drew DeMartino ripped a two-out, walk-off double into the right field corner as the Minutemen were defeated, 5-4, in 10 innings Tuesday afternoon at Fiondella Field.

Three Minutemen doubled in the loss in seniors Logan Greene and Alec Norton along with redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro.

Hartford capitalized on a pair of UMass errors, both with two outs, to take a 4-0 lead in the third inning.

UMass claimed two runs back in the fourth to halve the deficit. Norton walked and moved up on a wild pitch and ground out, setting up Shapiro's sacrifice fly to left to put the Minutemen on the board. Two batters later, junior Nolan Kessinger laced a single up the middle to cross sophomore Luke Oliphant from second base.

In the sixth inning, the Minutemen clawed back within one when a sac fly off the bat of junior Eddy Hart brought freshman Dylan Judd home. The squad finally tied the score at four-all in the eighth.

Norton opened up the eighth with a double off the left field wall. With redshirt freshman Kane Medina stepping in as a pinch hitter for Judd, Medina laid down a bunt on the first pitch he saw. The Hartford third baseman charged after the roller along the line but an error saw the throw skip into the right field corner and bring Norton 90 feet to the plate with the tying run.

UMass had chances to pull ahead in the ninth and 10th with two-baggers by Greene and Shapiro, respectively, but both were left at second base.

Hartford's Will Nowak (5-1) was the winning pitcher, dealing the final 2.2 innings. Freshman Jack Pawloski (0-2) took the loss after Pawloski entered in relief for 3.2 innings and holding Hartford to two hits plus two walks. Fellow freshman Daniel Livnat worked six innings in the start and received a no-decision. Livnat allowed four hits plus five walks and was responsible for four runs, although none were earned.

A very special weekend awaits the Minutemen as the squad hosts Davidson for a three-game Atlantic 10 series from May 3-5. In conjunction with the three-game set, UMass will be welcoming back the 1969 squad which was led by the late legendary head coach Dick Bergquist and reached the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Additional details on the weekend will be announced in the coming days.
