Massachusetts Baseball Drops 10-8 Contest at Miami (OH

UMass moved to 17-26 overall, and 12-17 in the MAC, while Miami (OH) improved to 34-15 overall and 21-8 in the league.
Anthony Tirado, Reece McCarthy, Braden Sullivan, Ryan Kolben and Matt Travisano all had two hits each. Tirado, McCarthy and Kolben all registered a double. Gavin O'Brien recorded his 13th home run of the year, solely taking over fifth in the single-season records in the category. O'Brien and Travisano scored two runs apiece, as four Minutemen tallied an RBI.
A sacrifice fly in the opening frame gave Miami (OH) a 1-0 lead early. The RedHawks pulled ahead 2-0 in the second, scoring on a throwing error.
Massachusetts got on the board in the top of the fourth as O'Brien led off with a solo home run, marking his 13th of the season, to make it a 2-1 contest. McCarthy then doubled down the right field line, before a sacrifice bunt advanced him to third. A sacrifice fly helped McCarthy across home plate to knot the game up 2-2.
Miami (OH) broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth to lead, 4-2, with a two-run home run to left field.
The Minutemen took back a run in the top of the fifth as Travisano came home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-3 game. UMass then tied it up, 4-4, as Vance Bonior scored from third on an error to first. McCarthy then singled to center field with O'Brien crossing the dish, giving Massachusetts the 5-4 lead.
The RedHawks added a run in the bottom half of the inning to knot up the game at 5-5.
Massachusetts reclaimed the lead at 8-5 in the top of the sixth. Jack Beverly started off the inning with a walk, before Travisano was hit by a pitch. Tirado doubled up the middle as Beverly came around to score to give UMass a 6-5 lead. With Travisano at third, a wild pitch allowed him to come home and move Tirado to third. Bonior was then walked. As Bonior stole second, Tirado was able to score on a throwing error by the shortstop to take the 8-5 advantage.
Miami (OH) notched three runs in the eighth to tie up the game once again, 8-8. The RedHawks recorded a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to win 10-8.
Jack Niedringhaus (1-2) took the loss for the Massachusetts, allowing three runs, three hits, a walk and striking out one in 0.2 innings.
Austin Berggren (3-4) had the win for Miami (OH), giving up no runs, one hit, no walks and dealing two strikeouts in one complete inning.
Massachusetts and Miami (OH) set for the series finale on Sunday, May 10, at 12 p.m. at McKie Field.
