Fast Start Helps Massachusetts Baseball Past Hartford, 9-2

April 25, 2023 | Baseball

Luttazi and Tichy belt home runs in the win, while Dalton records first win of the year.

AMHERST, Mass. – A fast start helped the University of Massachusetts baseball team claim a 9-2 victory over the University of Hartford on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Graduate student Steve Luttazi and junior Nolan Tichy contributed to UMass' score with a home run each in the seventh inning, while graduate student Tyler Dalton received his first winning decision of the season.

UMass improved to 7-25 overall, while Hartford dropped to 2-29 on the season.

Luttazi led the team with a career-high matching four hits, including his two-run long ball, and added two runs, and two RBI to his stat line. Tichy went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, marking his fifth of the season to tie the team lead, while tallying two runs and two RBI. Justin Blumenthal had a career-high and team best three RBI, as Blumenthal and Sam Hill both registered two hits. Four Minutemen contributed a hit to the Minutemen's total of 15. Hill and Jake Given recorded a RBI apiece, and Kevin Skagerlind totaled two runs, with Will MacLean, Carter Hanson and Hill scoring one each.

A RBI single to left field from Tichy with the bases loaded put the Minutemen on the board, before Blumenthal hit a two RBI single through the left side, pushing MacLean and Hanson across the plate in the first.

Massachusetts earned another run to take a 4-0 lead in the third frame. Hill and Chris Pearsons both walked with two outs, as Given drove in Hill on a RBI single to right field.

The sixth inning saw Luttazi lead off with a single to right field, before Tichy laid down a bunt for a single. With Luttazi on second and Tichy at first, Blumenthal singled up the middle, scoring Luttazi to make it a 5-0 game. Hill hit a single of his own to right field, allowing Tichy to cross the dish and extend UMass' lead, 6-0.

In the top of the seventh, Hartford put a run on the board on a ground out, but Luttazi blasted his third long ball of the season, bringing home Skagerlind in the bottom half of the inning, pulling the Minutemen ahead, 8-1. Tichy cranked a solo shot over the left field fence with two outs to put Massachusetts on top 9-1.

The Hawks tallied one more run in the final frame on a RBI single, but the Minutemen were able to record the final out of the game to win 9-2.

Earning his first winning decision of the season, Tyler Dalton (1-2), allowed only one hit, no runs, no walks and dealt three strikeouts in three complete innings pitched for Massachusetts. Derek Benzinger (0-3) had the loss for Hartford, giving up four runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out three in four complete innings of work.

UMass takes on Siena on Wednesday, April 26, at the Earl. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
