Baseball Edges Out Siena, 15-14

Four Minutemen earn career bests, while two record season-highs in the victory.

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Four Minutemen record career-highs on the day as the University of Massachusetts edged out Siena College, 15-14, at Connors Park on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Dylan Judd registered a career best in hits, while sophomore Kevin Skagerlind and freshman Will MacLean earned their career-highs in runs. Freshman Carter Hanson tallied career bests in both categories.
 
Judd led the team, going 5-for-5 on the day, and contributed a season-high four RBIs and had one run. MacLean sat atop the leaderboard with his career best four runs, as Skagerlind followed with a career-high of three. Both MacLean and Skagerlind tallied one hit apiece, while MacLean had two RBIs. Hanson totaled two hits and two runs, marking career-highs fro both categories, while Steve Luttazi also had two hits and Mike Gervasi aided in the win with two runs of his own. Skagerlind, Judd, Aidan Wilde an Luttazi all recorded a double, and Wilde batted in a season best three runs.
 
UMass scored early, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Skagerlind got the Minutemen on the board after scoring on a wild pitch. Wilde hit a sacrifice fly, allowing MacLean to touch home plate, before a single through the right side from Luttazi knocked in Gervasi. In the bottom half of the inning, Siena came back within one, making it a 3-2 contest, but claimed its onlylead of the game late with a two-run single.
 
Massachusetts knotted the game up at four apiece after Gervasi got walked with the bases loaded, sending Hanson home. A no-out, two-base knock from Judd brought both Skagerlind and MacLean to the dish, giving UMass the 6-4 lead in the second.
 
In the third, Judd singled through the left side, allowing Gervasi to score to pull ahead, 7-4, before Tichy was walked with the bases loaded, moving MacLean from third to home to make it an 8-4 contest. Wilde batted in both Gervasi and Judd on a double to left field, and a fielding error by the Saints on the play allowed Tichy to cross the plate, pushing the lead to 11-4. An RBI single from Hanson scored Wilde, while a two-run single up the middle by MacLean brought around Luttazi and Hanson, bringing the run total to eight in the frame and giving Massachusetts a 10-run lead.
 
The Saints scored a run in the fourth, before putting up three more in the sixth to close the gap to six. Siena pushed two more runs across the dish in the seventh to make it 14-10.
 
In the top of the eighth, MacLean scored from second on a single from Judd, but Siena closed in on UMass' lead, adding four runs to its total. The Minutemen were able to hold off the Saints in the final frame and win 15-14.
 
Tucker Wittman (1-1) picked up the triumph on the bump for UMass, as he allowed no runs on two hits, walked one and struck out one, in two innings of work. Matt Aronson earned the first save of his career, pitching 1.2 frames, while also allowing no runs on two hits and dealing four strikeouts, matching his career best. Trevor Kobryn (0-1) took the loss for Siena, going one complete innings, giving up three runs, one hit and walking four.
 
Massachusetts prepares for a three-game series against Atlantic 10 rival George Mason on Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May 1, at Earl Lorden Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m., while Saturday's contest begins at 1 p.m., on ESPN+. The series finale on Sunday is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
