Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Nipped By Saint Joseph's, 11-10

April 22, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA – The first Atlantic 10 men's lacrosse matchup between University of Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's came down to the final possession with the Hawks edging the Gorillas, 11-10 at Sean Sweeney Field on Saturday afternoon. The setback leaves UMass at 7-5 overall, 2-2 in the A-10, while Saint Joe's improves to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in conference action.

Eight Gorillas combined for the squad's 10 goals, with junior Grant Breyo pacing the Maroon & White with two tallies and an assist to go along with two ground balls. Redshirt sophomore Mason Bregman scored twice, senior Carter Castillo logged three points on a goal and two assists and graduate student Gabriel Procyk and redshirt sophomore Shane O'Leary registered a goal and an assist apiece. Redshirt sophomore Caleb Hammett won 12 of 23 faceoffs and corralled seven ground balls.

For Saint Joseph's, Matt Bohmer tallied three points on two goals and an assist, Stephen Dwyer netted a pair and Levi Anderson recorded two points (1g, 1a). Patrick Clemens collected a game-high nine ground balls and Zach Cole had eight.

O'Leary opened the scoring with 13:28 on the clock in the first before William King countered for the Hawks at 10:19 to level things at 1-1. Castillo briefly put UMass back in front off a dish from Procyk, but Saint Joseph's responded by closing out the quarter with a 3-0 run.

The Hawks' run stretched to 5-1 after senior Mike Tobin picked up his 15th tally of the season in the opening minute of the second quarter as Saint Joseph's built a 6-3 advantage. Breyo converted a man-up opportunity for the Gorillas with 12:03 remaining in the second, sparking a 5-1 run for UMass. The Maroon and White ended the half with four straight tallies, including Brady Hoff's first of his collegiate career, to tie the score at 7-7 at the break.

Bregman then opened the third quarter scoring to put the Gorillas in front, 7-8, and bookended the frame with a buzzer beater that preserved the one-goal edge for Massachusetts heading into the fourth at 10-9.

The Hawks managed the only two tallies of the final frame, though, to secure the one-goal victory. Levi Verch and Levi Anderson netted goals 1:05 apart at 11:18 and 10:13, respectively.

UMass had the final possession of the contest but was unable to beat goalkeeper Shane Ryan for an 11th time as he finished with nine saves. Senior Matt Knote totaled 11 stops in between the pipes for the Gorillas.

Massachusetts out-shot Saint Joseph's 45-39 and picked up 35 ground balls to the Hawks' 24. The Gorillas were 1-for-2 on extra man opportunities and a perfect 5-for-5 going a man down.

UMass will close out the regular season next Friday, April 28, on Garber Field at 5 p.m.
