#14 UMass Pulls Away From VCU For 12th Straight Win, 15-7

RICHMOND, Va. – The no. 14-ranked Massachusetts women's lacrosse team allowed just one second half goal to pull away from VCU in a 15-7 victory on Saturday afternoon at Cary Street Field. The win marked the 12th straight win for the Minutewomen (13-1 Overall, 7-0 Atlantic 10) with just two games left in the regular season.
UMass opened up the day with a 6-1 lead at the end of the first behind a first quarter hat trick from Alex Finn. Amy Moreau got the scoring started with her first of two goals in the opening quarter just under a minute into the game. Kassidy Morris put home her 23rd of the year with 6:20 left in the first to break a 1-1 tie before three consecutive goals from Finn made it a 5-1 contest.
VCU (6-9 Overall, 2-5 Atlantic 10) scored four straight goals to open the second quarter and pulled within one goal of UMass twice in the frame. Kelsey McDonnell started the four-goal scoring run on a free position attempt before Fiona McGowan ended the run with her 32nd of the year with 9:51 left in the second. VCU answered to pull within one just under two minutes later prior to a Charlotte Wilmoth goal that made it 8-6 in favor of the Minutewomen.
Wilmoth's goal began a stretch of seven straight for UMass with the junior netting her second of the game with 10:43 left in the third off an assist from Charlotte Clavelli. Lauren Tolve and Morris added goals in the third to help UMass build its lead back to five goals while holding the Rams without a goal for the first 22:15 of the second half.
Finn netted her fourth and fifth goals of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter while Wilmoth put home her team-leading 35th of the season to help cap off the stretch of seven straight goals for the Minutewomen. Wilmoth finished with a hat trick on the day and attempted a team-high seven shots.
VCU scored its only goal of the second half with 7:45 to go before Clavelli's eighth of the season off an assist from McGowan brought the score to a 15-7 final. McGowan finished with six assists and seven points on the day.
Both Gina Carroll and Catrina Tobin finished with three saves each while Tobin entered the game for the final 35 minutes and change, allowing just one goal during the span. Layton Nass and Audra Tosone each caused a pair of turnovers while Hannah Heller secured a game-high three ground balls. Jordan Dean finished with eight draw controls to surpass 100 for the season and move within one of Caitlin Petro (2019) for eighth-most in a single season by a Minutewoman.
The Minutewomen conclude their two-game road trip on Saturday at Saint Joseph's with a noon draw before returning home to Garber Field on Saturday, April 29 for Senior Day against George Mason.
