Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Secures 12-10 Win Over High Point In A-10 Debut

AMHERST, Mass. – After building an early six-goal cushion, University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse, held off a second half push by High Point to secure the program's first conference victory as a member of the Atlantic 10, 12-10, on Saturday at Garber Field. The win moves the Gorillas to 6-3 overall (1-0 A-10), while the Panthers fall to 6-5 (0-1 A-10) on the year.
Offensively for UMass, Mike Tobin posted his first hat trick of the season and added an assist for a four-point afternoon and Gabriel Procyk dished three assists and scored his 17th tally of the year. Shane O'Leary had two goals and an assist, while Cater Castillo and Mason Bregman logged two goals each, as well. Caleb Hammett grabbed a game-high nine ground balls and won 15 of 23 (.652) over X. Ryan Sharkey led the defense for the Maroon & White with five caused turnovers.
For High Point, Jaxson Lamb netted four, Hunter Vines logged four helpers and Brayden Mayea finished with a hat trick.
Michael Ippolito opened the scoring for the Panthers at the 12:04 mark of the first quarter before Procyk set up John Krisch's first collegiate goal with 7:42 remaining in the opening frame. Less than a minute later, Procyk picked up another assist and followed with his own tally at the 6:06 mark, part of a 7-0 run for the Gorillas.
High Point managed the next two goals to bring the score to 7-3 before Tobin converted on a man-up chance for Massachusetts. Mayea collected his first of the day with 2:24 remaining in the second, closing the gap to 8-4 at the intermission.
O'Leary pushed the UMass lead back to five with the opening goal of the third. The Panthers then picked up the next three tallies, including a finish by Colin Cooke at the buzzer to bring High Point within a pair of the Gorillas heading into the final quarter.
Bregman twisted his way to the front of the cage for his second of the day to open the fourth to bring the advantage to 10-7. The Panthers, however, responded with a three-goal run and leveled the score at 10-10 with 5:21 remaining in regulation.
Tobin then put Massachusetts back on top for good, threading the needle to complete his hat trick with 4:06 left. Senior Anthony Sericolo followed by giving the Gorillas some insurance, converting on a two-minute EMO off the dish from senior Tim Hoynes with 3:26 on the clock.
High Point out-shot UMass, 51-36 in the contest, but the Maroon & White held the edge in ground balls, 36-32. The Gorillas went 3-for-6 on extra man opportunities and successfully killed off all three man down situations.
Goalkeeper Matt Knote finished with 14 stops for Massachusetts, surpassing the 500-save mark for his career. Parker Green had 10 saves for High Point.
