Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Picks Up 9-6 Road Victory At UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse built a 3-0 first quarter lead, never trailing en route to a 9-6 victory over UAlbany on Tuesday afternoon, With the win, the Gorillas move to 3-2 on the season, while the Great Danes drop to 1-3.
In a balanced offensive effort for UMass, nine players combined for 13 points, led by graduate student Gabriel Procyk's second straight hat trick. Senior Carter Castillo netted two goals and junior Grant Breyo had a goal and an assist.
Silas Richmond and TJ Sheehan combined for five of six UAlbany tallies, Richmond with a hat trick and Sheean with two goals and an assist.
Procyk helped UMass build the three-goal cushion, first putting UMass on the board at the 11:34 mark of the opening frame with his tenth of the season from senior Anthony Sericolo and adding another at 3:56 after Shane O'Leary's unassisted tally, which came with 9:41 on the clock.
Sheehan closed out the first quarter scoring to put the Great Danes on the board with 11 seconds to go in the period and then opened the second quarter with another strike to bring UAlbany within 3-2 of the Gorillas.
Castillo drove to the cage to pot a highlight reel tally at 12:04 of the second to regain a two-goal cushion for UMass before Richmond answered once again for the Great Danes with 5:25 remaining in the stanza. Breyo then closed out the first half scoring with a long-range strike to push the advantage back to two for the Maroon & White at the intermission.
The Gorillas traded goals with UAlbany again to start the second half. Castillo expanded the Massachusetts lead to three only to have Richmond respond for the Great Danes exactly two minutes later.
Breyo set up Will Abbott for the score on a man-up opportunity for UMass at the 6:49 mark off the third quarter and Mason Bregman bounced one in with 2:41 to go in the period, doubling up UAlbany at 8-4.
Peter Salit scored for the Great Danes with 8:17 on the clock in the fourth, while Procyk would complete his hat trick off a feed from Dylan Arrant at 5:06. Richmond netted the final goal of the afternoon for UAlbany with 1:14 left in the contest.
The Great Danes edged the Gorillas in shots, 38-34, while UMass led the ground ball battle, 32-31. Massachusetts went 1-for-2 in extra-man opportunities, while UAlbany was 0-for-1.
Goalkeeper Matt Knote finished the day with 15 saves for the Gorillas and corralled five ground balls. Caleb Hammett went 10-for-18 over X for UMass.
The Gorillas will return to action on Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Burlington, Vermont to face UVM.
