Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Stymies Vermont In 12-4 Road Win

March 11, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse

BURLINGTON, Vt. – In a game that began as a 1-0 defensive battle through the first quarter, Massachusetts men's lacrosse pulled away from Vermont, outscoring the Catamounts 9-1 over the next two periods to secure a 12-4 victory at Virtue Field on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Gorillas to 4-2 on the year, while the Catamounts fall to 2-4 on the season.

In an all-around team effort, UMass had 10 individuals register at least one point with nine different goal scorers. Senior Mike Tobin paced the gorillas with a career day, tying his career single-game bests with five points and three assists to go along with two goals. Senior Carter Castillo set a career high with four points on two goals and two assists. Graduate student Gabriel Procyk logged two tallies to extend his streak to five straight multi-goal games.

Jake Harrington had two goals for UVM, the lone Catamounts player with multiple points on the day. Jackson Canfield registered a game-high five ground balls and had two caused turnovers for Vermont.

With the potential of a scoreless opening quarter looming, Castillo put Massachusetts on the board with 2:07 remaining and then increased UMass' lead to 2-0 with 8:59 to go in the second. Procyk, Mason Bregman and Grant Breyo followed with goals at 6:27, 3:41 and 1:53, respectively to push the Gorillas advantage to 5-0. Griffin Fenech then put the Catamounts on the board at the 1:33 mark, to bring the score to 5-1 at the intermission.

The Maroon & White came back out of the locker room and outscored Vermont 5-0 in the third quarter. Tobin netted the first two of the stanza and then set up Procyk's second of the day with 10:59 on the clock. Senior Zack Kearney collected his first of the season from Castillo with 6:56 remaining in the frame and Tobin set up graduate student Will Abbott at 3:17 to cap the five-goal run.

UVM added its second of the day at 7:43 of the fourth to open the scoring in the final quarter, but the Gorillas quickly added two more with freshman Aiden Drunsic and redshirt sophomore Jack Wittmaack scoring just 15 seconds apart. Wittmaack's marked the first goal of his collegiate career. Vermont then closed out the contest with two tallies in the final 80 seconds.

The Catamounts finished the day with a 40-34 advantage in shots and edged UMass in ground balls, 18-17. The Gorillas were 0-for-2 in extra man opportunities, while successfully holding UVM to an 0-for-7 day on the man-up.

Massachusetts senior Matt Knote made 12 saves on 14 shots on net before being relieved by Tyler Bluse (4 saves, 2 goals allowed). Redshirt sophomore Caleb Hammett won 12 of 17 faceoffs on the day for the Maroon & White. George Egan logged eight saves between the pipes for the Catamounts.

UMass returns home next Saturday, March 18, to play host to #6/7 Rutgers at 1 p.m. on Garber Field.
