AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse scored five goals in the final 2 minutes, 57 seconds of the opening quarter and withstood a Brown rally in the fourth to defeat the Bears, 10-9 on Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Gorillas close out their non-conference slate at 5-3, while Brown drops to 3-4.

Redshirt sophomore Mason Bregman led the UMass offense with four points on the day, registering his first career hat trick and dishing an assist. Classmate Shane O'Leary joined Bregman with four points on two goals and two helpers. Senior Carter Castillo netted a pair and logged an assist and graduate student Will Abbott scored twice. Graduate student Gabriel Procyk extended his scoring streak to seven straight with a goal and an assist.

For the Bears, Tanner Burns put up three points on a goal and two assists, Aidan McLane and Ben Locke registered two goals apiece, Trevor Glavin contributed two points on a goal and an assist and Marcus Wertheim picked up a pair of helpers.

Brown began the day with a 3-0 advantage courtesy of McLane's pair coming at 9:47 and 8:02, while Locke added another 60 seconds later.

With just under three minutes to play in the opening quarter, UMass' offense came alive, burying five before the break. Abbott opened the flurry with his eighth of the season from Castillo, while O'Leary followed, finishing his turnaround attempt at the 2:20 mark. Castillo then tied things at 3-3, burying a feed from Mike Tobin with 1:44 to go in the first. Abbott added another with 1:07 remaining to put the Gorillas on top, 4-3, and Bregman got on the board for the first time on the day with 26 seconds left.

O'Leary opened the second quarter with his second of the day at the 14:35 mark, before Brown responded at the 3:55 mark to break up the run with a goal from Matteo Corsi, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of the Maroon & White at the close of the half.

Glavin trimmed the Bears' deficit to one with 13:47 on the clock in the third before Massachusetts strung together a three-goal run, starting with Castillo tucking home a feed from O'Leary at the 12:40 mark. Bregman then completed his hat trick with back-to-back tallies at 11:59 and 9:29.

Wells Bligh pocketed Brown's sixth of the contest with 5:41 left in the third quarter, while Procyk countered with UMass' 10th of the day from Bregman at 1:18 of the third.

The Bears threatened to make a comeback in the fourth with goals from Burns, Ryan Behrens and Locke at 11:00, 7:37 and 4:27, respectively, making it a one-goal game. However, the Massachusetts defense stood strong, holding Brown scoreless over its final three possessions, forcing a shot clock violation, a turnover and a kick save from goalkeeper Matt Knote with 29 seconds to go.

Knote finished the day with nine stops for the Gorillas, while Connor Theriault turned aside 16 between the pipes for the Bears.  UMass out-shot Brown, 41-32 on the day and won the ground ball battle, 32-28.
