Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Drops Matchup With No. 6 Rutgers, 11-5

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts lacrosse finished the opening frame with a one-goal advantage, but No. 6 Rutgers outscored UMass 5-0 in the second to help the squad pull away and hand the Gorillas a 11-5 setback at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. Massachusetts now sits at 4-3 overall, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 7-1 on the year.
 
Five different Gorillas provided the five tallies on the day for UMass with graduate student Gabriel Procyk also adding an assist while extending his goal scoring streak to six straight games.
 
For Rutgers, Dante Kulas paced the squad with four points on two goals and two assists, while Ross Scott, David Sprock and Eric Civetti had two goals apiece. Shane Knobloch contributed a goal and an assist to round out the multi-point scorers on the day for Rutgers.
 
Sprock opened the scoring with 14 on the clock in the first with Dillon Arrant answering for the Gorillas less than two minutes later to knot the score at one. Knobloch found the back of the net for the Scarlet Knights with 8:55 remaining in the period before UMass pocketed tallies from junior Grant Breyo and graduate student Will Abbott at 6:04 and 4:22, respectively to put Massachusetts up 3-2 after 15 minutes of action.
 
Kulas quickly leveled things at 3-3, collecting his first of the day just 15 seconds into the second quarter. That began a 5-0 period for Rutgers, part of a 6-0 run that Kulas capped with a man-up tally at the 8:45 mark of the third.
 
Procyk broke up the offensive drought for the Gorillas with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter, picking up his team-leading 15th goal of the season.
 
Jack Aimone and Civetti both scored in the opening 3 minutes, 12 second of the final frame to push the Rutgers advantage to 10-5 before defenseman Ryan Fitzpatrick registered his second career tally with 4:58 to play.
 
Noah Daniels capped the scoring for the Scarlet Knights with 2:18 remaining in the contest.
 
Rutgers out-shot UMass 53-32 on the day and went 1-for-3 in extra-man opportunities, while the Gorillas were 0-for-1. Each team won 10 of 20 faceoffs and the Scarlet Knights went 18-for-19 on clear attempts and Massachusetts was 11-for-15.
 
Goalkeeper Matt Knote totaled 20 stops for UMass, one shy of matching his career best and Kyle Mullin totaled 12 saves for Rutgers. Redshirt sophomore Caleb Hammett collected a game-high six ground balls.
 
Massachusetts will continue its three-game homestand next Saturday, March 25, when the squad will close out its 2023 non-conferences schedule with a matchup against Brown at 1 p.m.
