#20 UMass Wins Sixth Straight, Defeats Brown 14-9

The Minutewomen got off to a 5-0 start on the evening on the way to their sixth consecutive victory.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The no. 20-ranked Massachusetts women's lacrosse team won its six straight game as the Minutewomen picked up a 14-9 win at Brown on Tuesday in the non-conference finale. Five different Minutewomen (7-1 Overall) finished with two or more goals with Amy Moreau and Fiona McGowan each finishing with hat tricks.
 
UMass jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin play before Brown scored its first goal of the evening with nine seconds to go in the first. Moreau got the scoring started less than three minutes in before Charlotte Wilmoth netted her team-leading 17th of the year.
 
McGowan put home her 16th of the season off an assist from Alex Finn before picking up an assist of her own on an Erin Seibel goal with 5:36 left in the first. Kassidy Morris capped off a five-goal quarter for the Minutewomen with her 13th of the season.
 
Moreau started the second quarter just as she did the first, opening the scoring this time less than two minutes in to make it 6-1. Tessa Shields put home her first two goals of the season in a three-minute span to make it 8-2 after Brown struck with 11:03 to go in the half.
 
McGowan added three more assists to her tally in the second quarter, first finding Lauren Tolve to make it 9-2 before assisting on goals from Wilmoth and against from Tolve. McGowan surpassed the 100-point mark for her career during the game while the pair of assists helped UMass take an 11-5 lead into the halftime break. She finished the afternoon with three goals and a tied for career-high four assists for seven points.
 
Brown scored three consecutive goals in the final moments of the second quarter, scoring all three in just over two minutes of game action to then cut the UMass lead down to four at 9-5. The Bears went on to score the final goal of the third to being a stretch of four straight goals from the home team. Brown scored three within the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to make it a 13-9 contest. Maddie Joyce led the Bears with three goals while Mia Mascone added a goal and two assists.
 
Moreau completed her hat trick to end the Brown scoring run, scoring her 15th of the year off an assist from Tolve with 2:25 to play.
 
Gina Carroll finished with a pair of saves in goal in the first half for UMass while Catrina Tobin also stopped two in the second half. Defensively for the Minutewomen, Hannah Heller finished with four draw controls with Shields and Audra Tosone each adding two. Moreau led the UMass defense with two turnovers caused.
 
The Minutewomen resume Atlantic 10 play on Saturday at George Washington at noon.
