AMHERST, Mass. - The no. 20-ranked Massachusetts women's lacrosse team opens a back-to-back on the road this week tomorrow with a 5 p.m. start at Brown. The Minutewomen and Bears will be live on NESN+ in the final non-conference game of the season for UMass.
Top-25 Rankings
The Minutewomen moved up four spots in the latest IWLCA DI Poll to no. 20 after being ranked no. 24 most recently. UMass was ranked as high as 22 in the poll earlier this season on Feb. 20.
Last Time Out
UMass picked up a top-25 win over then no. 25-ranked Richmond on Saturday in the Atlantic 10 opener. Four Minutewomen finished with hat tricks led by six goals and two assists from Fiona McGowan while Amy Moreau, Kylee Bowen, and Alex Finn each finished with three or more. UMass outscored the Spiders 4-0 in the third quarter to build a 19-8 lead in the eventual 22-12 win.
Turning Them Over
Audra Tosone ranks among the top-10 players in the nation in caused turnovers per game at 2.50 while Layton Nass ranks 15th among DI leaders at 2.0. As a squad, the Minutewomen are 28th in the country in caused turnovers per game and lead the conference at 9.57 per contest.
Five-Game Winning Streak
UMass is in the midst of a five-game winning streak and has a 6-1 record on the regular season to rank seventh among DI teams in winning percentage.
McGowan's Attack
Fiona McGowan ranks among the top-40 nationally in both assists and assists per game through seven games this season. The senior ranks 32nd nationally in assists per game at 2.0 and is 39th in total assists at 12. McGowan also ranks among the top-10 in the A-10 in points with 21 to lead the Minutewomen.
Top-10 Scoring Defense
The Minutewomen rank ninth among DI teams in scoring defense at 8.0 goals allowed per contest. UMass has held its opponents to 12 goals or less in its five-game win streak and is averaging 9.0 goals against during the span.
Home Sweet Home
UMass is on a nine-game regular season winning streak at Garber Field dating back to last season. The Minutewomen won five consecutive regular season games on their home field last season and are 4-0 at Garber this year. UMass last lost a game at home on March 5, 2022 in non-conference play and hasn't lost a regular season league game at home since April 18, 2010.
The Century Mark
Senior attack Alex Finn eclipsed the 100 career point mark in last Saturday's win at UConn. Finn currently has 63 career goals and 43 career assists for 106 career points.
Minutewomen Among Active Leaders
Gina Carroll ranks 30th among NCAA active DI leaders in career goals against average at 11.4 and is three saves away from reaching 200 for her career. Layton Nass ranks 43rd among active leaders in caused turnovers per game at 1.38 while Audra Tosone ranks 47th at 1.33 per game.
Looking Ahead
The Minutewomen resume Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a noon start on Saturday at George Washington. UMass plays its next home game on Garber Field on Wednesday, March 22 at 2 p.m. against La Salle.
