#24 UMass Opens A-10 Play With 22-12 Win Over #25 Richmond

Fiona McGowan led four Minutewomen with hat tricks as she scored a game-high six goals with two assists.

AMHERST, Mass. The no. 24-ranked Massachusetts women's lacrosse team opened Atlantic 10 play with a 22-12 win over no. 25-ranked Richmond on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. Four Minutewomen finished with a hat trick as UMass (6-1 Overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) netted a season-high 22 goals in the win.
 
Fiona McGowan scored a game-high six goals and dished out two assists to lead the UMass offensive while Amy Moreau added four goals and two assists. Kylee Bowen and Alex Finn each added three goals to finish with hat tricks of their own.
 
McGowan's pair of assists give her a team-leading 14 on the year while her six goals moved her to 15 on the season. Bowen's three goals moved her into a tie for the team-lead in goals on the season with 16 while Finn's hat trick gave her 15 goals on the year.
 
Bowen and Finn got the scoring going for UMass early as they each struck for goals in the first 2:03 to put the Minutewomen ahead 2-0. After Richmond (5-2 Overall, 0-1 Atlantic 10) followed with two straight to tie, UMass went on to score five of the next six goals to take a 7-3 lead on a Finn behind the back score with 3:37 to go in the first. McGowan scored twice in less than a minute near the end of the opening quarter to lead 9-5.
 
Bowen added two more goals to her tally midway through the second quarter with her third of the game putting UMass on top 12-6 with 6:44 remaining in the half. The Minutewomen led by as many as eight in the second at 15-7 on a Moreau goal with 39 seconds left in the half to help UMass to a 15-8 advantage at the break.
 
The Minutewomen outscoring the Spiders 4-0 in the third quarter to build a 19-8 lead heading into the final quarter. Four different Minutewomen scored in the third with McGowan and Hannah Heller netting goals in the first seven minutes of action. Kassidy Morris scored with 8:00 on the clock off an assist from McGowan before Moreau capped off the third with her 12th of the season.
 
Richmond pulled back within nine twice in the fourth quarter, with McGowan answering a Richmond goal with 6:59 left before Morris answered with her 12th of the year with 18 seconds remaining.
 
Catrina Tobin earned the win in goal for the Minutewomen as she finished with five saves and seven goals allowed in three quarters of work. Moreau and Audra Tosone each finished with three caused turnovers for the UMass defense while Jordan Dean recorded a game-high 12 draw controls.
 
For Richmond, Arden Tierney and Lindsey Frank led the Spiders with four goals each and secured six and seven draw controls, respectively.
 
The Minutewomen hit the road for their next two contests beginning on Tuesday at 5 p.m. with a matchup at Brown.
