AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 23-ranked University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team heads to No. 3-ranked Boston College for an in-state battle on Wednesday. The Minutewomen and Eagles begin play at 3 p.m. from the Fish Field House and the game is closed to the general public.
Series With Boston College
Boston College has won the last two matchups in the rivalry meeting with UMass' last win coming by way of a 15-11 win over the Eagles in the 2020 season opener. BC won last season's matchup in Amherst by a score of 22-5 with UMass returners Alex Finn and Charlotte Clavelli picking up goals.
Top-25 Ranking
UMass checked in at no. 23 in the latest ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Top 25 poll on Monday. The Minutewomen are one of two ranked A-10 teams with Richmond coming in at no. 21.
Last Time Out
The Minutewomen picked up a 16-7 win over UMass Lowell at Garber Field in the season opener on Saturday. Kylee Bowen had a career-high seven goals in the win with five coming in the second half of play. Redshirt freshman goaltender Catrina Tobin had seven second half saves after entering goal following the halftime break of a 5-5 tie. UMass scored 11 second half goals and allowed just two from the River Hawks in the final 30 minutes.
A-10 Offensive Player of the Week
Kylee Bowen was tabbed the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week after putting home a career-high seven goals in Saturday's win over UMass Lowell, including five in the second half to help the Minutewomen outscore the River Hawks 11-2 in the final 30 minutes. The senior attempted nine shots on the day with all nine on goal while her seven goals were the most among A-10 players on opening weekend.
A-10 Defensive Player of the Week
Layton Nass was named the A-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week after collecting four ground balls while forcing four turnovers in her first game as a Minutewoman. Nass also helped the UMass defense hold UMass Lowell scoreless in the third quarter and held them to two goals in the fourth.
Win No. 1
Saturday's win over UMass Lowell marked the first head coaching win for new head coach Jana Drummond. Drummond was named the 10th head coach in program history on June 3 as she was elevated from assistant coach to head coach. She spent five seasons as an assistant coach at UMass and helped the team to an 81-21 record with five A-10 regular season titles, two A-10 tournament championships, and three NCAA tournament berths. Drummond also spent time as an assistant coach at Marist after wrapping up her playing career at Oregon, where she was a three-time all-conference selection and finished as the program's all-time leading scorer with 146 goals.
Looking Ahead
UMass follows Wednesday's matchup with the next two games on its home surface at Garber Field. The Minutewomen host Siena at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 and welcome in Dartmouth for a noon start on Saturday, Feb. 25. UMass then hits the road for its next two games with road contests at Holy Cross and UConn.
