Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Tops Army 10-8 In Season Opener

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse rode a 4-1 first half to a 10-8 season-opening win over Army at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Gorillas to 1-0 to start the year, while the Black Knights fall to 0-1.
UMass used a balanced offensive attack to down Army, led by senior Carter Castillo's first career hat trick. Redshirt sophomore Shane O'Leary added a pair of goals, graduate student Gabriel Procyk contributed two assists and sophomore Dillon Arrant notched a goal and an assist.
The Gorillas and the Black Knights traded tallies in the first five minutes of the contest with junior Grant Breyo opening the scoring at the 13:17 mark before Jacob Morin answered for Army to knot things up at 1-1.
UMass then held the Black Knights scoreless for the remainder of the half while going on a 3-0 run to lead 4-1 at the break. Arrant and Castillo found the back of the net at 7:04 and 4:35 in the first and senior Anthony Sericolo had the lone score of the second quarter, which came at the 2:08 mark.
Army came out in the third and scored a pair 16 seconds apart to pull within one. O'Leary gave the Gorillas back a two-goal cushion at the 6:01 mark of the third, but the Black Knights responded with the final tally of the frame at 5:10, making it a one-goal game heading into the final quarter.
Morin buried his second of the day just 44 seconds into the fourth quarter as Army pulled level with UMass at 5-5. Castillo punched home the next two for the Gorillas to complete his hat trick for a 7-5 advantage for the Maroon & White with 9:02 remaining.
The Black Knights used a 3-1 run, punctuated by a man-up goal from Reese Burek to tie the score at eight with 6:07 to go.
With the potential of overtime looming, graduate student Tim Hoynes broke the deadlock at the 3:28 mark and senior Mike Tobin capped the scoring with a diving highlight reel goal at 2:25.
Army finished the contest with a 46-30 shot advantage and went 1-for-2 on EMOs, while UMass was 0-for-2. Senior Matt Knote logged 19 saves between the pipes for the Gorillas and Knox turned aside nine for the Black Knights.
Massachusetts will be back in action next Friday, February 17, when the squad travels to UMass Lowell for a 1 p.m. matchup.
