Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Moves To 2-0 With 11-3 Win At UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse trailed 1-0 from the outset, but held UMass Lowell scoreless for the next 28-plus minutes and ultimately came away with an 11-3 victory at Cushing Field on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Gorillas improve to 2-0, while the River Hawks fall to 0-2 on the year.
Graduate student Gabriel Procyk led UMass with a five-point day on four goals and an assist, which included the 99th and 100th tallies of his career. Graduate transfer Will Abbott posted his first hat trick as Gorilla and senior Mike Tobin had two goals and an assist. Graduate student Tim Hoynes and junior Grant Breyo each notched their second goals of the season, senior Carter Castillo dished two assists and senior Anthony Sericolo contributed a helper.
The River Hawks scored on their first shot of the game and would not beat Massachusetts goalkeeper Matt Knote again until there were 54 seconds remaining in the half. With UMass trailing 1-0, Hoynes tied the score with 7:48 remaining in the first quarter, beginning a 4-0 run for the Gorillas.
Abbott notched the next two for Massachusetts and Tobin punctuated the scoring for UMass in the first half, driving to the crease for an unassisted tally at 6:54.
The third quarter was all Gorillas as the Maroon & White outscored UMass 4-0 to build an 8-2 cushion, aided by a Procyk hat trick in the frame and included a man-up tally.
Riley Lawhorn opened the fourth with UMass Lowell goal at the 14:03 mark, but the Gorillas did not allow another the rest of the way with Breyo, Abbott and Procyk completing the scoring.
UMass out-shot UMass Lowell, 40-17 on the day. Knote totaled nine saves for the Gorillas and his counterpart Luke Renaud had 18 stops for the River Hawks.
Massachusetts was 24-for-24 in clear attempts on the day, Caleb Hammett won 10 of 15 faceoffs and grabbed eight ground balls. Chris Campbell, Ryan Sharkey and Zack Kearney each registered two caused turnovers apiece, contributing to UMass' total of 11 on the day.
The Gorillas will be back in action on Saturday, February 25, when the squad will play host to Boston University at 3:15 p.m. on Garber Field.
