Senior Kylee Bowen had seven goals

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Kylee Bowen scored seven goals to lead the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 16-7 victory over UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.

The game was tied 5-5 at the half before Bowen and the UMass offense took over, outscoring the River Hawks 11-2 in the second half. The victory marked the first career win for newly appointed head coach Jana Drummond.

To go along with Bowen's seven goals, the Minutewomen got big performances from Alex Finn (3G) and Kassidy Morris (2 G, 1 A), who netted her first collegiate goal. To round out the scoring, Charlotte Wilmoth, Lauren Tolve, Fiona McGowen, and Charlotte Clavelli all tallied a goal as well.

The Minutewomen defense was backstopped by Layton Nass (4 CTO) and Hannah Heller (2 CTO) to go along with six saves from goaltender Catrina Tobin, who played the second half.

UMass Lowell got a pair of goals from Molly Shaw, Izzy Liquori and Jade Catlin who did the heavy lifting for the River Hawks.

The Minutewomen came out swinging with three unanswered goals to start the game before UMass Lowell got on the board at 3:58. After Bowen responded with her first goal of the day to end the first quarter, the River Hawks rallied to score four unanswered. Bowen stopped the run by tallying her second of the day to end the half, making it a 5-5 game.

In the third, Alex Finn and Bowen took over as they took turns scoring, combining for all five goals scored in the quarter.

Massachusetts outshot Lowell 41-22 (29-13 SOG), while winning the draw control battle 20-6 and posting 13 caused turnovers to three for the River Hawks.

The women's lacrosse team returns to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Boston College in a game that will be available via ACC Network+.
