AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team heads to Boston for its first road game of the new season at Northeastern on Thursday night. The Minutewomen and Huskies tip off at 7 p.m. on NESN+ and FloHoops.
The Opponent
Thursday's game marks the 34th all-time meeting between UMass and Northeastern with the Huskies leading the series with a 17-16 record. The teams first met during the 1968-69 season and last played on Dec. 2, 2018. Northeastern came away with a 53-52 win on their home court while current UMass Director of Player Development Jessica George led the Minutewomen with 15 points.
The Opener
The Minutewomen came away with a 56-44 win over Saint Peter's in the 2023-24 regular season opener on Monday evening. The UMass bench chipped in 27 points, led by 19 from Kristin Williams, while holding the Peacocks to 23-percent from the field as a team.
First W
Head coach Mike Leflar picked up his first career win as a head coach on Monday night. Leflar was announced as the 12th head coach in UMass women's basketball history in April following five years as an assistant and associate head coach in Amherst. Leflar joined the UMass staff for the 2018-19 season and was promoted to associate head coach in December of 2021. Leflar spent three seasons at Northeastern prior to arriving in Amherst and also spent time as an assistant at Binghamton, Boston University, and Penn.
Double Up
Junior Stefanie Kulesza posted her first career double-double in Monday's win over Saint Peter's as she racked up career-best numbers in points with 15 and rebounds with 14. Kulesza, a former guard, moved into a forward role this season and hauled in 10 of her 14 boards on the defensive glass.
Pouring It In
Kristin Williams set a new career-high in scoring with 19 points in the win over Saint Peter's. Williams knocked down three 3-pointers in 32 minutes off the bench and recorded 12 of her 19 points in the second half.
Team Captains
Graduate students Tori Hyduke and Bre Bellamy were named the 2023-24 team captains earlier in the week. Hyduke spent the last three years at Drexel after a freshman season at George Washington and has appeared in 97 collegiate games. Bellamy played four seasons at William & Mary, starting in 86 games with 100 appearances.
South of the Border
UMass will play three games from Nov. 23-25 in Riviera Maya, Mexico as part of the 2023 Cancun Challenge. The Minutewomen begin MTE play with Green Bay on Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m. and follow with Washington State the next day at 11 a.m. UMass concludes the tournament with a matchup no. 14-ranked Maryland on Nov. 25 at 11 a.m.
Looking Ahead
Thursday's matchup at Northeastern marks the second of three games in seven days for the Minutewomen. The 7 p.m. tip against the Huskies is the first or two road games with UMass heading to Maine on Sunday. The Minutewomen return home to the Mullins Center on Thursday, Nov. 16 to take on Harvard at 6 p.m.
