UMass Falls On The Road At Northeastern, 78-74

Bre Bellamy led four Minutewomen in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-7 from the field.
BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team fell in its first road game of the season to Northeastern on Thursday evening at the Cabot Center, 78-74. Four Minutewomen (1-1 Overall) finished in double figures on the night, led by 15 from Bre Ballamy on 5-of-7 from the field.
Kristin Williams added 13 points while Tori Hyduke and Jermany Mapp chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. UMass finished the night shooting 39-percent from the field and 33-percent from range while Northeastern shot 51-percent from the field.
The Minutewomen converted on seven of their first 12 shot attempts from behind the 3-point line and pulled back within one at 28-27 with just over eight minutes left in the second following a 3-pointer by Dallas Pierce. UMass had six different players knock down shots from beyond the arc in the opening half with Williams and Bellamy each converting a pair from deep to head into the half with six points apiece.
Northeastern held a 42-36 lead at the halftime break after shooting 56-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play. The Minutewomen finished the half 8-of-17 from range and shot 39-percent from the field.
UMass had a scoring drought just over four minutes in the third quarter as the Huskies pushed their lead to 10 at 54-44 with 3:03 left in the third before eventually going up by as many as 13 with 1:43 left. Williams ended the drought with her third triple of the evening the following possession to put UMass back with 10.
The Minutewomen held the Huskies without a field goal from the :50 mark of the third quarter until the 4:42 mark of the fourth. UMass pulled within four points at 61-57 on a pair of Lilly Ferguson free throws. The Huskies scored their first nine points of the final quarter from the free throw line, finishing the quarter 13-of-20 from the line and 24-of-33 on the night.
The Huskies took advantage of a two-plus minute scoring drought by the Minutewomen late in the fourth to extend its lead back to 10 at 75-65 with just under two minutes to go. A 7-0 UMass scoring run over 30 seconds pulled the Minutewomen back within a possession at 75-72 on a Mapp 3-pointer with 20 seconds to go before the Huskies converted on the ensuing free throws.
The Minutewomen conclude their two-game road trip on Sunday with a 1 p.m. tip at Maine and return to the Mullins Center on Thursday, Nov. 16 for a 6 p.m. matchup with Harvard.
