Massachusetts Swimming & Diving Readies For NJIT Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts swimming and diving heads to Newark, New Jersey, for two days of competition at the NJIT Invitational. The invite will be swimming only and begins on Friday, October 13, at 5 p.m. On Saturday, October 14, the events start at 10 a.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
Last Time Out
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for a score of 2,022 to claim first at the Justin Jennings Invitational, hosted by Colgate, last weekend. The Minutewomen earned a team score of 923 to take first, while the Minutemen placed first with a team score of 1,099.
 
The team victory for the women's team marked the third consecutive win at the invitational. In total, UMass won 10 individual events on the final day of competition and added 17 top-three marks.
 
Fast Freshmen
Freshmen Beren Cakiroglu and Lindsay Burbage posted the top times in the 100 free and the 200 breaststroke, respectively, for the Minutewomen. Cakiroglu swam a time of 53.33 in 100 free, while Burbage completed the 200 breaststroke with a time 2:27.76.

Additionally, Diya Ackerman-Vallala competed in the 500 free, posting a third-place finish with a time of 5:17.02, as Burbage earned third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.33.

For the Minutemen, Jude Boukarroum's recorded time of 4:54.71 in the 500 free aided him to a third-place finish.
 
Weekly Honors
Two members of the women's swimming and diving team tabbed Atlantic 10 weekly awards, as senior Bri Williams was named the A-10 co-Performer of the Week, while Cakiroglu was selected the A-10 Rookie of the Week. It marked the first weekly honors for both Williams and Cakiroglu in their careers.
 
Williams earned the accolade after finishing first in both the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke, swimming a time of 58.03 and 2:06.23, respectively. She also aided the 400 medley relay team to gold with a time of 3:54.59, swimming a 58.01 time in her leg of the race, while helping the 400 free relay team to a silver medal with a time of 3:35.69.
 
Cakiroglu captured two first-place finishes in her collegiat debut, winning the 200 free with a time of 1:54.45 and the 100 free with a time of 53.33 to garner the award. She also placed fourth in the 50 free, completing the event with a time of 24.70. Cakiroglu assisted the 400 medley relay team to a silver medal (3:56.67), while helping the 400 free relay team to a bronze medal (3:38.20).
 
Additionally, Sammy Quigg of the men's swimming and diving team was named one of the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week. He placed first in three individual events. In the 200 free, he finished with a time of 1:41.98 to claim first, and recorded a time of 21.20 in the 50 free to sit atop the podium. He also took the gold in the 100 free with a time of 45.25. Quigg also earned a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, swimming a time of 52.73, and helped the 400 medley relay team to first-place finish with a time of 3:28.80. 
 
Next Up
After one week off, UMass will return to the pool on Saturday, October 28, when the Minutewomen host Yale at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr., Pool at 11 a.m., for competition.
 
The Minutemen will compete against Yale in an exhibition during the event on Saturday.
