Massachusetts Swimmers Place Second At The NJIT Invite

The Minutemen earned a team score of 868.50, while the Minutewomen completed the competition with a final score of 1,045.

NEWARK, N.J. – University of Massachusetts swimmers completed competition at the NJIT Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the NJIT Wellness & Events Center, with both the men's and women's team placing second at the invite.
 
The Minutemen capped off day two with one individual win and 11 top-three marks, as they collected a team score of  868.50, behind NJIT (1,030). The Minutewomen concluded competition with a team score 1,045, behind Vermont (1,133), and garnered seven individual medals and 24 top-three finishes.
 
Freshman Diya Ackerman-Vallala kicked off day two with a win in the 400 individual medley with a season-best time of 4:38.04. For the Minutemen, seniors Sam Haddad and Wilson Dubois claimed second and third, respectively. Haddad finished with a time of 4:10.36, while Dubois recorded a season-best time of 4:16.06.  
 
In the 100 butterfly, senior Ashley Calderon took the gold with a time of 56.74, followed by graduate student Summer Pierce, who grabbed the silver with a time of 56.76, for the Minutewomen. Senior Juan Montori posted a time of 52.08 in the event to finish in third-place, as junior Grant Beebe took fourth with a time of 52.57.
 
UMass picked up two second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle event, with freshman Beren Cakiroglu posting a time of 1:54.72 for the Minutewomen and sophomore Sammy Quigg swimming a season-best time of 1:41.26. Freshman Olga Stoura claimed the bronze in the women's event (1:56.68).
 
For the Minutewomen, freshman Lindsay Burbage paced the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:05.42, while senior Maggie Desmond followed behind in second with a time of 1:06.68.
 
The 100 backstroke saw the Massachusetts women's swimmers sweep the podium. Senior Bri Williams finished first with a time of 57.76, marking a season-best, while senior Megan Mitchell followed in second with a time of 57.82. Senior Caroline Mahoney swam a season-best time of 57.95 to claim third. For the Minutemen, senior Eric Eastham placed third in the event with a time of 53.30.
 
Mitchell garnered a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:04.12), followed by Williams in second (2:06.20) and junior Lauren Stott in third (2:08.38). Eastham swam the third fastest time in the event for the men's team with a time of 1:56.67.
 
Mahoney and Cakiroglu recorded first and second place finishes in the 100 freestyle, swimming times of 52.51 and 53.01, respectively. Quigg took second in the 100 freestyle with time of 46.32. In the 200 breastroke, Burbage claimed the silver with a season-best time of 2:26.11, while Ackerman-Vallala finished third with her own time of 2:27.04.
 
Another podium sweep for the Minutewomen saw Pierce lead the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.81, followed close behind by junior Anna Kwon in second (2:06.74) and Calderon in third (2:07.12). Freshman Aydin Erkan posted a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.40, marking a season-best fro the rookie.
 
In the relay events, the women's team took first and second place in the 400 medley relay. The team consisting of Mitchell, Burbage, Pierce and Cakiroglu combined for a time of 3:52.21, with the team membered by Williams, Desmond, Calderon and Mahoney recorded a time of 3:52.33. The men's 400 medley relay team took second as junior Beau Bengston, senior Jack Artis, Montori and Quigg finished with a time of 3:28.45.
 
During the 400 freestyle relay, the quartet of Cakiroglu, Kwon, Desmond and Mahoney posted a time of 3:34.14 to pick up the gold, while the team of Pierce, Mitchell, Ackerman-Vallala and Calderon finished with a time of 3:36.10 to grab the silver for the Minutewomen. For the Minutemen, graduate student Emerson Kiefer, Montori, Eastham and Quigg teamed up to place second with a time of 3:08.40.  UMass completed the event with a third-place finish, as well, as sophomore Aidan Shepston, freshman Alonso Montori, Beebe and senior Charles Blanc swam a time of 3:11.84.
 
After one week off, UMass will return to the pool on Saturday, October 28, when the Minutewomen host Yale at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr., Pool at 11 a.m., for competition.

The Minutemen will compete against Yale in an exhibition during the event on Saturday. 

DAY ONE
After winning two individual events and nine top-three marks, the University of Massachusetts women's swimming and diving team leads after day one of the NJIT Invitational, while the men's swimming and diving team placed second after garnering four top-three finishes at the invite.
 
The Minutewomen completed Friday to lead the meet with a score of 383, followed by Vermont (375) and LIU (170). The Minutemen sit in second behind NJIT (379) with a score of 286.50, while LIU (206.5) and Saint Peter's (87) are in third and fourth, respectively.
 
Graduate student Summer Pierce paced the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.86 to claim first, while freshman Diya Ackerman-Vallala came away with second with a time of 2:08.79. Freshman Lindsay Burbage took fourth in the event recording a time of 2:10.00.In the men's 200 individual medley, senior Sam Haddad placed second after swimming a time of 1:57.39, marking a season-best.
 
For the Minutewomen, senior Maggie Desmond finished the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.25 to earn first place. Following close behind was freshman Beren Cakiroglu in second  and senior Caroline Mahoney in fourth, both finishing with season-best times of 24.39 and 24.61, respectively. Sophomore Sammy Quigg posted a season-best time of 21.18 in the men's 50 freestyle to claim the silver.
 
In the relay events, the quartet of senior Megan Mitchell, Desmond, Pierce and Mahoney completed the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.75 to collect the gold. Senior Bri Williams, Burbage, senior Ashley Calderon and Cakiroglu placed second in the event with a time of 1:46.14 for the women's team. In the men's 200 medley, junior Beau Bengston, senior Jack Artis, senior Juan Montori and Quigg combined for a time of 1:34.54 to finish second.
 
During the 200 freestyle relay, the Minutewomen claimed first and second as the team of Cakiroglu, Calderon, Mahoney and Desmond swam a time of 1:36.00 and the team of Ackerman-Vallala, Williams, Mitchell and Pierce completed the event with a time of 1:36.25, respectively. Montori, Bengston, junior Grant Beebe and Quigg recorded a time of 1:26.00 to take second for the Minutemen.
