AMHERST, Mass. - Rising sophomore Renata Farima becomes the first active Massachusetts women's tennis player in program history to compete in the Billie Jean King Cup on Tuesday, June 7 through Saturday, June 11, at the Bellevue Tennis Club in Ulcinj, Montenegro. Farima will compete with her native nation, the Republic of Moldova, and face Armenia first on Tuesday.
Former alumnae Ruth Crawford ('19) will also be competing in the International Tennis event with her native nation, Ghana.
The Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, native, finished her rookie season with an overall singles record of 13-4, including a 4-2 record in Atlantic 10 play. She primarily competed at court No. 1, tallying an 11-4 record in the slot. In doubles, she posted a 15-4 record and a 6-2 conference record, partnering mostly with teammate Anna Napadiy at No. 2. Throughout the season, Farima collected seven A-10 weekly honors, claiming A-10 Rookie of the Week six times, while securing A-10 Performer of the Week once. She also tabbed the A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie of the Year and was named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team.
Farima and her team will play in Event A of Group III, which include 16 nations, in a round-robin style competition, consisting of four groups of four nations. Her and her team are set to compete in a group containing Armenia, Mauritius, and Morocco. Crawford and Ghana will compete in a group with Algeria, Azerbaijan and Cyprus. The top teams in each group will contest a two-stage knock-out draw with one team earning a promotion to Europe/Africa Group II.
Along with Moldova, Ghana, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Morocco and Mauritius, other nations taking part in either Group III Event A or in Group III Event B are Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, Montenegro, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Event B matches will be held at the Tennis Club Jug in Skopje, North Macedonia.
The Billie Jean King Cup, which was formerly known as Federation Cup (1963-1995) and Fed Cup (1995-2020), launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). With 116-plus nations entered, it is now the largest annual team competition in women's sports in the world.
