Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse To Join Atlantic 10 As Conference Adds 22nd Sport
May 23, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
UMass, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s, High Point and Hobart will play in the A-10’s inaugural season in 2023.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse program will become UMass' 19th program in the Atlantic 10 as the conference has announced that it will add men's lacrosse as the league's 22nd sport beginning in the 2022-23 academic year. The Minutemen will be joined by the three additional A-10 schools that currently sponsor men's lacrosse—Richmond, St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's.
The Atlantic 10 has also accepted men's lacrosse affiliate member applications from High Point University and Hobart College, bringing the number of conference teams to six, the minimum number the NCAA requires of a league for postseason eligibility. In the last 10 years, the six men's lacrosse programs have combined to make 10 NCAA Tournament appearances.
"I want to thank the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and Commissioner Joe D'Antonio for providing a great conference home for Massachusetts lacrosse over the last 13 years," said Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford. "We will miss the competitiveness of the CAA but welcome the opportunity to join our all-sport conference in the sport of men's lacrosse. We are excited about generating new rivalries with our five conference peers and the challenge of building a championship program in the A-10."
"The A-10 has sponsored women's lacrosse for the past 23 years," said Massachusetts head coach Greg Cannella. "Our department and program are thrilled that the A-10 will now sponsor men's lacrosse. We look forward to competing with some of the best programs in the nation in Saint Joseph's, Richmond, Hobart, High Point and St. Bonaventure. The challenges and rivalries ahead will be consistent with where UMass men's lacrosse has been and looks forward to being a part of."
Massachusetts has sponsored men's lacrosse since 1954 and has spent the last 13 seasons as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Gorillas have reached the NCAA Tournament 19 times, including a national runner-up finish in 2006.
Richmond began its program in 2014 and has reached the NCAA Tournament four times in eight full seasons. St. Bonaventure added men's lacrosse as a varsity sport in 2019 and Saint Joseph's began competition in 1993 with seven conference championship finals appearances and an NCAA berth in 2022.
High Point University is a Division I institution located in High Point, N.C. The Panthers have sponsored men's lacrosse since 2013 and have played in the NCAA Tournament twice, including in 2021.
Hobart College is a Division III institution that participates in Division I for men's lacrosse. Located in Geneva, New York, the Statesmen program began in 1898 and have won 16 national championships at the Division II, Division III and USILA levels prior to ascending to Division I in 1995. Hobart has played in the NCAA Division I Tournament five times.
