Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Uses Strong Start To Down Hofstra, 13-9

Three different Gorillas had hat tricks in the victory on Saturday.
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse built a 3-0 advantage and never trailed en route to a 13-9 road victory over Hofstra at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Gorillas improve to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the CAA, while the Pride fall to 5-9 on the year and 1-3 in conference action.
Kevin Tobin registered a team-high five points with a hat trick and two assists, while contributing three groundballs. With his first assist of the day he became the highest scoring midfielder in UMass history, passing Jeff Trainor (2017-21) with his 148th career point. Logan Liljeberg chipped in four points, logging a hat trick for a second straight game and dishing an assist. Aidan Kaminska also added three tallies on the day for his first collegiate hat trick.
Goals from Liljeberg, Kaminska and Gabriel Procyk put the Gorillas up 3-0 through one quarter of play. Hofstra responded with the first two goals of the second quarter to pull within one before UMass countered with another three-goal run to push its lead to four. The Pride went on to score three goals in 1 minute and 18 seconds to close out the half and make it a 6-5 margin at the break.
The teams traded goals twice in the third quarter before Tobin's tally at the 2:05 mark began a stretch of four straight tallies for Massachusetts that helped secure the win. Carter Castillo opened the fourth with his first career goal, followed by a pair from Kaminska that helped the Gorillas build their largest lead of the day, five, at 12-7 with 8:29 to play.
Hofstra netted two then Tobin completed his hat trick with 1:42 left to cap the scoring.
The Pride edged UMass in shots, 38-37, while shots on goal were even at 24 apiece. The Gorillas corralled 34 groundballs to Hofstra's 25, led by Caleb Hammett's nine as he also won 16 of 25 faceoffs for the Maroon & White. Goalkeeper Matt Knote made 15 saves for Massachusetts and Mac Gates had 11 stops for the Pride.
Griffin Turner and Gerard Kane paced Hofstra's offense with four points apiece, both on two goals and two assists.
UMass will close out the regular season next Friday, April 29, at Garber Field at 6 p.m. on Lax Sports Network.
