Women's Lacrosse Rises to 9-2 with Win Over VCU

April 01, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse

AMHERST, MA. – The Massachusetts Women's Lacrosse team rose to 9-2 on Friday with a convincing 20-7 victory over the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University. This win saw the Minutewomen climb to 3-0 in the Atlantic 10, tying Richmond atop the conference. The team was able to share the ball with ease, recording seven assists on the day compared to the Rams' zero.

It was a Kendra Harbinger leading the charge on Friday, as the graduate student recorded a team-high in both goals (5) and assists (3). Also dishing it out was redshirt senior Julia Smith, who had two goals and two assists of her own. Experience held true for scoring as well, as graduate student Kelly Marra had a hat-trick of her own, picking up 3 goals. Eight other Minutewomen tallied goals in the contest.

Gina Carroll grabbed her ninth win of the season, as the Senior continues to impress for the Minutewomen. The clears for Massachusetts were an elite 12-12.

The Minutewomen outshot the visitors 31-21, with shots on goal having an even wider gap separating the two rivals (29-15). UMass continued to dominate in possession, picking up nine ground balls to the Rams four. The rams however picked up the advantage in draw controls, 17-14.

The Minutewomen came out red-hot, climbing to a 6-0 lead at the end of the first period. The team never relinquished that lead and was able to slowly run away with the game by building a double-digit second-half lead. The team did a terrific job towards the end of the contest protecting the ball and having only one turnover for the entire fourth period.

UMass would roll to a 20-7 win, placing them at 3-0 and stalemated atop the A-10. Massachusetts will stay at home on Sunday, April 3 to host George Mason with a 12:00 p.m. first draw.
