Big First Quarter Helps Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Hold Off Vermont, 12-10

The Gorillas outscored the Catamounts 5-0 in the opening frame.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse opened up Wednesday's game against Vermont by out-scoring the Catamounts 5-0 in the first quarter and went on to secure a 12-10 win over the Catamounts. With their third straight victory the Gorillas improve to 4-3 on the season and 4-0 at home on Garber Field, while UVM falls to 2-6.
UMass continued its balanced offensive output with nine individuals combining for the squad's 12 tallies. Graduate student Logan Liljeberg and senior Kevin Tobin finished with a team-high four points apiece. Liljeberg posted a hat trick and dished an assist, while Tobin contributed a goal and three assists.Senior Gabriel Procyk logged two goals and an assist, while Mike Tobin logged a goal and an assist. Caleb Hammett won 14 of 23 faceoffs and had 10 groundballs in the contest.
Kevin Tobin began a stretch of five straight goals by five different Gorillas in the first quarter, starting off the scoring at the 10:02 mark and Liljeberg capped the run with his first of the day with 1:58 remaining in the stanza.
The Catamounts responded by starting off the second quarter with a three-goal spurt to close the gap to 5-2, but UMass countered with three tallies of its own. The squads than traded goals in the closing minutes of the half as Massachusetts headed to the locker room with a 9-4 advantage.
Mike Tobin began the third with his 10th of the season to give the Gorillas a six-goal cushion at 10-4, but Vermont countered with a 4-0 run to pull back within striking distance at 10-8.
Procyk broke up a nearly 17-minute scoring drought for UMass with 11:45 to go in the fourth and Liljeberg gave the Maroon and White more breathing room at 12-8 with 10:13 remaining.
Michael McCormack and Brock Haley scored for the Catamounts to get back to within two of the Gorillas, but the Massachusetts defense held firm the rest of the way despite being tested with a man-down situation with 35 seconds remaining and starting goalkeeper Matt Knote serving a cross checking penalty.
Knote finished with eight saves and Dom Elmo had a clutch stop to keep Vermont from making it a one-goal game with under a minute to play. UMass ended the day with a 40-39 edge in shots and led in shots on goal. 26-21. The Gorillas were a perfect 13-for-13 in clear attempts and turnovers were tied at seven apiece.
McCormack logged a game-high four goals for UVM and David Closterman added a hat trick and one assist.
UMass will be idle this weekend and will return to action on Saturday, March 26, for its final non-conference game of the season at No. 13/15 Brown at 1 p.m.
