Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Defeats LIU 12-7 In Snowy Saturday Showdown

March 12, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse

Liljeberg leads Gorillas with five-point effort, Procyk collects 100th career point.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts senior Gabriel Procyk opened the scoring midway through the first quarter as the Gorillas never trailed in a 12-7 victory over LIU on a snowy Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. The win levels UMass' record at 3-3 on the season, while the Sharks drop to 3-4 on the year.

Graduate student Logan Liljeberg paced the Maroon and White with a five-point day with a hat trick and two assists to go along with three groundballs. Procyk followed with two goals and an assist to become the 44th member of UMass' 100-point club and had four groundballs and a caused turnover. Senior Anthony Sericolo and sophomore Grant Breyo both added two tallies apiece as Breyo extended his scoring streak to six straight games.

Weather conditions kept the scoring low through the first quarter, with Procyk and Liljeberg getting things started with goals at the 8:30 and 6:08 marks to put the Maroon & White out in front, 2-0. Richie Lacalandra cut the Sharks' deficit in half, but Procyk struck again with 18 seconds remaining in the frame.

The teams traded goals twice in the second, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of the Gorillas at the break.

Massachusetts then opened the third quarter with a three-goal run to expand its advantage out to 8-3. Five Gorillas found the back of the net in the stanza, as UMass outscored LIU 5-2 in the period, capped by Zack Hochman's first of the year at the 1:06 mark.

Sericolo and Breyo made it four straight tallies for Massachusetts with the first two goal of the fourth that brought the lead to 12-5 before the Sharks scored the final two of the day with under three minutes to go.

UMass nearly doubled up LIU in shots at 41-26 and put 26 on target to the Sharks' 16. The Gorillas went 3-for-7 in extra-man opportunities, while holding LIU to a 0-for-4 day in man-up situations. Massachusetts was 17-for-19 on its clear attempts despite the adverse weather conditions, compared to the Sharks' 13-for-22.

Blake Behlen led LIU with three goals on the day, while Lacalandra had two goals and an assist. Sharks goalkeeper Will Mark finished with 14 saves and Matt Knote turned aside nine between the pipes for UMass.

The Gorillas will be back in action on Wednesday, March 16, when the squad will close out its homestand against Vermont at 1 p.m. on Garber Field.
