Minutewomen Down River Hawks in Season Opener

LOWELL, Mass. — A four-goal outing from Albany transfer, Kendra Harbinger, propelled the UMass women's lacrosse team to a season opening win at UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon. Nine different Minutewomen (1-0) netted goals in the contest, including seven who had multiple scores.
"I thought we did a great job of setting the tone early in the game, winning draws, and being efficient offensively.' Said head coach, Angela McMahon-Serpone. 'Our defense stepped up and made some great caused turnovers, and then our sideline energy was awesome as well and really carried us throughout the game."
Harbinger led the offensive charge with the four goals on five attempts. Amy Moreau and Maddy Moloney each found the net twice for the Minutewomen. Julia Smith, Alex Finn, and Kylee Bowen also tallied two goals and one assist each. Along with Harbinger, Charlotte Wilmoth made her debut as a Minutewoman with two goals, an assist, and a ground ball in the victory. Hannah Young and Olivia Muscella rounded out the scoring for UMass, while Muscella notched a team high six draw controls. Gina Carroll took the win with three saves for Massachusetts.
Two River Hawks (0-1) were responsible for the host's total scoring. The pair of Molly Shaw and Emily Stratton tallied two goals in the game each. Megan Brockbank assisted in two scores for UMass Lowell.
Overall, Massachusetts held a 28-to-19 advantage in shots, putting 26 between the pipes.
Massachusetts opened with four unanswered goals in the first three minutes of the contest, before the River Hawk's Stratton then scored to cut the lead to three at the 10:58 mark. But UMass answered that goal less than a minute later. The Minutewomen then went on a six-goal terror to end the first frame with a 10-1 lead over the hosts.
The second quarter started with back-to-back goals from for the Minutewomen as Alex Finn netted her first goal of the contest, followed by Bowen. With the 12-1 advantage, Shaw put the River Hawks on the board for the second time, but Harbinger answered that effort with her fourth goal of the contest.
Bowen opened the third frame for UMass at the 12:55 mark. After back-to-back River Hawk goals from Stratton and Shaw, Massachusetts put the game away with four unanswered scores for the 18-4 victory.
The Minuteowmen will return to action on Wednesday at Garber Field as No. 1 Boston College makes the trip to Amherst. The opening draw is set for 12 PM.
