Trainor becomes program's highest scoring midfielder during loss
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse graduate student Jeff Trainor became the program's highest scoring midfielder; however, UMass was unable to offset a late scoring run by the Pride in a 12-11 loss at Garber Field on Friday evening.
With his first point of the evening - an assist - Trainor reached 141 career points and surpassed Norm Smith (140 points; 1976-79). Trainor finished with three points on two goals and an assist and enters next Saturday's game against Towson with 143 points.
Kevin Tobin led Massachusetts with five points via four goals and an assist. Mike Tobin added a three point outing via one goal and a pair of helpers. Dillon Arrant and Billy Philpott also scored twice each while Matthew Hill and Zack Kearney added a point apiece via assists.
The starting close defense trio of Sam Eisenstadt, Jackson Suboch and Adam Towey each provided a pair of caused turnovers. Suboch also scooped up three groundballs while Eisenstadt and Towey notched one each.
Matt Knote started between the pipes and provided 13 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter alone.
Massachusetts built an 8-4 lead midway through the second quarter via efficient offense as the UMass defense kept Hofstra's offensive leader Ryan Tierney scoreless. During that time, the Minutemen scored five consecutive times between the middle of the first quarter and the opening of the second frame.
Down a goal early on, Arrant connected with 10 minutes, 59 seconds and 7:26 to go before Philpott earned his first of the night. Kevin Tobin followed with back-to-back conversions with 3:38 left in the first and then at the 11:54 mark of the second. The five-goal run flipped the 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead for Massachusetts. For Tobin's second during the run, and third of the game, the 5-foot-6 middie fielded a pass by Trainor and launched a shot into the top-right corner as Tobin's momentum tumbled him to the turf.
However, Tierney found the back of the net with 3-minutes, 5-seconds to play in the second at the front of a halftime-spanning five goal run by the Pride. During that scoring span, Tierney netted three while Justin Lynskey and Riley Forte tallied once each. Tierney ended the game with a game-best six points via three goals and as many assists.
Hofstra opened the third quarter with back-to-back man-up goals after UMass long-stick midfielder Jack Gump was flagged for a one-minute, full-time-served illegal body check. Tierney scored only 34 seconds into the third before Lynskey tallied at the 14-minute mark for two goals during the single penalty.
After one more for the Pride, Kevin Tobin's fourth goal got Massachusetts back on track and evened play at 9-all with 4:41 to go in the third quarter. Tobin carried at X, raced around the left pipe and sniped the top-right corner with a sidearm shot as he fell away from the goal.
Philpott briefly put Massachusetts back in front, 10-9, with his second of the night; however, the Pride responded with three in a row for a 12-10 margin late in the quarter. Forte scored during a man-up play with 8:37 to go before Lynskey converted twice-in-a-row at the 6:58 and 4:05 marks.
Trainor cut the deficit back to one in the final minute before three penalties put the Pride down two men down for the final possession. Michael Altmann was charged with unsportsmanlike conduct and holding with 16 seconds to play before Sean Paton took a 1-minute crosschecking penalty at the 7-second mark. UMass was unable to generate an on-target attempt during the limited time remaining as the clock ran out on the comeback try.
Hofstra outshot Massachusetts, 36-31 and led in groundballs 37-28 while UMass committed more turnovers, 19-18. The game featured nine penalties for a combined 7:00 minutes - five by Massachusetts spanning four minutes and four by Hofstra for three minutes served.
