Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Falls At No. 12 Delaware, 9-6

Defense limits Blue Hens but offense falls short in second half

NEWARK, Del. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse limited the potent No. 12 Delaware offense to nine goals on 43 shots but was unable to score in the second half during a 9-6 loss at Delaware Stadium on Friday evening. UMass falls to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the CAA with the loss and will learn its CAA Championship fate following the league's final game of the regular season on Saturday. Delaware improved to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the CAA, and guaranteed itself the top seed in the CAA Championship with its win over UMass.

Graduate student midfielder Billy Philpott and senior Kevin Tobin scored twice each while graduate student attack Devin Spencer posted two points on a goal and assist. Rookie attack Dillon Arrant added a goal while senior attack Jack Siebert and sophomore midfielder Mike Tobin provided an assist each.

Sophomore faceoff specialist Zack Hochman won 11 of the game's 17 faceoffs and grabbed five groundballs. Hochman's 11 faceoff victories pushed him to 207 career wins in 364 taken. The .568 faceoff win percentage is sixth-best in team history while his wins and total faceoffs rank 12th in program history.

Sophomore goalie Matt Knote made 14 saves, caused one turnover and grabbed a groundball.

Mike Robinson led Delaware with three goals scored on 17 shots taken. Mark Beida had two goals and an assist for the Blue Hens while Cam Acchione scored twice as well. Matt Kilkeary made 13 saves in net.

Delaware sprinted out to a two-goal lead, but Massachusetts responded with four straight in the first quarter and led by a 4-2 margin after one. It included both of Kevin Tobin's goals, one from Philpott and Spencer's tally. Spencer made it 4-2 Massachusetts when he ran around the right post from X and buried a shot attempt at close range.

The Blue Hens evened it at 4-all less than three minutes into the second quarter before Philpott and Arrant put UMass ahead again. Philpott ran unchecked down the right side and placed a shot between Kilkeary legs for the 5-4 advantage with 10 minutes, 22 seconds to go in the second. Arrant followed 42 seconds later with a sidearm fastball inside the left post for a 6-4 UMass advantage.

The Massachusetts offense fell silent following Arrant's goal - his 19th of the year - and the Blue Hens used the remaining time to erase their deficit and earn their home win.

Beida brought the game back to even with his first of two in the second half, which he scored with 11:01 left in the third. Charlie Kitchen provided the eventual decisive goal only 31 seconds later.

Delaware led in shots, 43-32 and shots on goal, 23-19. The Blue Hens also led in groundballs, 37-30, while each side committed 18 turnovers. The Massachusett defense limited Delaware to 1-for-8 during man advantages and UMass went 0-for-2 in man-up situations.
