May 06, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse

Knote makes 18 saves in season-ending loss to the Dragons

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - No. 3 seeded University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse ended its 2021 season with a 13-8 loss to No. 9 nationally-ranked and No. 2 seeded Drexel in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Semifinal Round at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium on Thursday evening. Sophomore goalie Matt Knote tallied 18 saves and grabbed a pair of groundballs while senior midfielder Kevin Tobin earned a team-high five points on two goals and three assists.

Massachusetts closed the year 4-6 overall following the loss. Drexel - winners of eight straight games - improved to 9-2 with the victory.

Graduate student midfielders Billy Philpott and Jeff Trainor provided a pair of goals apiece. Rookie attack Dillon Arrant and graduate student midfielder Devin Spencer each scored once.

Sean Donnelly led Drexel with seven points on five goals and two assists. Aidan Coll added four goals and helped out on one more Dragons tally. Ross Blumenthal made 10 saves in between the pipes.

The Dragons turned a 6-2 deficit early in the third quarter into an 11-6 advantage nearly 20 minutes later thanks to a nine-goal run. Coll and Donnelly each recorded hat tricks during the scoring spurt alone, which Trainor finally broke at the 8-minute mark in the fourth.

The game marked the final for eight UMass players: Cameron CarpenterJoe Casucci, Charlie O'Brien, Philpott, Clayton Proctor, Spencer, Jackson Suboch and Trainor.

Carpenter transitioned from playing goalie for UMass from 2018-20 into a short-stick defensive midfielder role during 2021. He appeared in four games at SSDM as a graduate student, primarily playing during man-down situations. Casucci played in two games this season and nine during his career.

O'Brien played in the first three games this season before suffering a season-ending injury. He concludes his tenure with 27 points on 14 goals and 13 assists in 47 games played. The two-way midfielder added 31 groundballs and 11 caused turnovers as he also played on the clear and ride.

Philpott - the only six-year player in program history - leaves as the career leader with 65 appearances on the first- or second-line midfields. After suffering an injury as a true freshman in 2016, he worked his way into the lineup as a short-stick defensive midfielder in 2017 before he carved out a role as a two-way midfielder for the remainder of his career. All of his 74 points (59 goals, 15 assists) came in his 49 games played between 2018-21.

Proctor saw considerable time during man-up situations throughout his career and posted 14 points on five goals and nine assists while he also grabbed seven groundballs and caused a turnover. Proctor scored four of his nine career goals during man-up situations.

Spencer provided 87 points through 54 goals and 33 assists during 53 appearances primarily on attack. Spencer notched 25 points during the 2021 season via nine goals and 16 assists. He tied for the team lead in assists this season with 16, the most Spencer recorded in one year in his career.

Suboch concludes his career on close defense with 48 caused turnovers to go with 76 groundballs and two assists. It places him eighth in the UMass record book for most career caused turnovers. He earned each of his 48 career caused turnovers between the 2018-21 seasons.

Trainor departs as the program's highest scoring midfielder and tied for 16th all-time in program history with 147 career points (85 goals, 62 assists). His 85 goals are the 21st-most in team history and his 62 assists rank 18th-most. Trainor also filled a two-way midfielder role for the team and provided 87 groundballs and 28 caused turnovers during his 62 career games played.
