Defense Not Enough In Men's Lacrosse Senior Day Loss

Massachusetts falls to Towson, 9-6, despite second half shutout
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse kept Towson off the scoreboard in the second half but could not overcome a five-goal halftime deficit in a 9-6 Senior Day loss at Garber Field on Saturday. Massachusetts dropped to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the CAA with the loss while Towson improved to 6-6, including 3-3 in league games.
Massachusetts recognized its classes of 2020 and 2021 during a short, on-field ceremony prior to the game. It included Class of 2020 members Cameron Carpenter, Charlie O'Brien, Billy Philpott, Devin Spencer, Jackson Suboch and Jeff Trainor, and Class of 2021 members Joe Casucci, Chris Connolly, Kevin Cutinella, Sam Eisenstadt, Clayton Proctor, Jack Siebert and Kevin Tobin.
UMass also recognized Class of 2020 graduate Dan O'Brien, who accepted a job following graduation in the Spring, 2020 in place of returning for a graduate season.
Sophomore Zack Hochman dominated the faceoff dot throughout the game and finished 17-of-19 (.895) with 13 groundballs and one goal. Hochman's groundball total tied for the most in a single game during his UMass tenure and also tied for the fourth-most by one player in program history. Hochman's 17 faceoffs won tied for the second-most in one game during his UMass career.
Rookie attack Dillon Arrant posted a hat trick with three goals on only four shots. He also grabbed one groundball and caused a turnover. Tobin added three points on a goal and two assists. Junior attack Gabriel Procyk and Trainor rounded out the scorers as Procyk tallied once and Trainor dished an assist.
Suboch provided three caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs on close defense, while Eisenstadt totaled a career-best five groundballs to go with two caused turnovers alongside Suboch.
Sophomore goalie Matt Knote made 10 saves in the cage and grabbed one groundball. Knote's 10-save outing marked his sixth with double-digit stops in seven games this season.
Ryan Swain led the Towson offense with three goals while Tim Montgomery and Austin Stewart scored twice each. James Avanzato had a game-high four assists. Shane Brennan made 13 stops and prevented rebound shots in front with six groundballs.
The Tigers posted a 4-0 lead less than 10 minutes in as Towson generated its early offense with crisp ball movement. It included two goals by Swain, one by Stewart and another from Carson Gaeger.
Tobin broke Massachusetts' scoreless start to the game at the 4-minute, 14-second mark with his eighth of the year. Hochman cut the deficit to a pair only six seconds later after he cleanly won a faceoff, grabbed the groundball, sprinted in a straight line toward the cage and whizzed a shot into the back of the net.
Massachusetts pulled no closer the remainder of the game, while Towson maintained its steady offense into halftime for a 9-4 margin at the break.
Knote totaled eight of his 10 saves during the third and fourth quarters, but Brennan answered on the other end with nine stops of his own in the same span. Massachusetts pulled within three at the 11:11 mark of the fourth on Arrant's third strike of the day, but failed to convert again the remainder of the day.
Towson led in shots, 34-31 though each team had 19 on-target attempts. UMass turned the ball over 21 times to the Tigers' 20, but led in groundballs, 35-23, due to Hochman's faceoff superiority. Neither team scored during their lone 30-second man-up opportunity.
Massachusetts continues its season at Fairfield on Sat., April 24 with a Noon faceoff from Rafferty Stadium.
