AMHERST, Mass. – After picking up a 23-13 victory in its season opener on Sunday, the No. 22 UMass women's lacrosse team makes a quick turnaround to return to action on Tuesday afternoon against No. 11 Boston College. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m. from Fish Field House on the ACCNX.

UMass returns 32 letterwinners from last season's 4-1 squad and welcomes nine newcomers to this year's team.

The series with the Eagles
This will be the sixth straight year UMass and BC have met on the lacrosse field after an eight-year hiatus in the all-time series. The programs began the series in 1981 before falling dormant in 1998. The Eagles are 16-9 all-time against the Minutewomen.

Last season against Boston College
After seeing No. 5 Boston College storm back to erase a four-goal deficit and take a 10-9 lead with 13 minutes to play, UMass responded in a massive way by scoring six of the game's final seven goals to knock off the Eagles last season at Garber Field, 15-11.

The win was UMass' first over a top-five team in the history of the program, and the first victory against a ranked opponent since beating No. 10 Colorado in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Connaughton leads Minutewomen past Boston Univ. in season opener
Senior attack Haley Connaughton provided nine points at the helm of the No. 22 Massachusetts women's lacrosse offense as the Minutewomen started their 2021 campaign with a 23-13 victory at Boston University's Nickerson Field on Sunday. Connaughton split her points between five goals and four assists as Massachusetts won its fourth consecutive season-opening game and its seventh in the last eight seasons.

Graduate student attack Kaitlyn Cerasi, graduate student midfielder Stephanie Croke and sophomore attack Alex Finn generated hat tricks for the Massachusetts offense as 11 Minutewomen etched their names into the scoresheet. UMass also garnered multi-point outings from Brinley Anderson, Emma Dotsikas, Fiona McGowan and Olivia Muscella.

The Minutewomen also played aggressively on defense, which resulted in nine caused turnovers by the Terriers. Senior defender Courtney Barrett provided a game-high three caused turnovers while junior midfielder Amy Moreau added a pair. Barrett also scooped up a game-best four ground balls.

Chasing history
Senior attack Kaitlyn Cerasi enters the 2021 season poised to rewrite the UMass record book. Cerasi, who has already left her mark on several single-season marks during her time in Amherst, is prepped to make a move up UMass' career records list this year. Cerasi three goals on Sunday at Boston University moved into a tie for 11th on UMass' all-time goals list.

Minutewomen selected second in A-10 Preseason Poll
UMass was picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 in the preseason coaches' poll released by the conference on February 4. The Minutewomen earned 93 points, including four first place votes, in the poll trailing only Richmond (96 points, six first place votes), making the two squads the clear favorites for the A-10 title this season.

Petro named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American
Senior draw specialist Caitlyn Petro was named a Preseason Second Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse on February 1. Petro, who was named a Second Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse in 2020, led the nation in draw controls per game in 2020 with 11.2 wins per game, while her 56 draws in just five games played ranked in a tie for seventh in the NCAA.

The Manchester, N.H. native recorded double-digit draws on three occasions this season, including a career-high 17 in a victory on the road at Connecticut on March 7.

UMass welcomes Livvy Unglaub to women's lacrosse program through Team IMPACT
Ahead of the season opener, head coach Angela McMahon announced that 12-year old Livvy Unglaub has joined the Minutewomen as an official member of the program through Team IMPACT.

"We are very excited to celebrate a small all-star who is having a very big impact," McMahon said. "Livvy is a courageous 12-year-old from Feeding Hills, Mass. who has been diagnosed with TCell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, which makes playing sports a challenge. However, we all know the life-changing benefit of team, and as such, UMass women's lacrosse has created a spot for her on our roster."

Livvy comes to the UMass women's lacrosse team through Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects kids facing serious and chronic illnesses to college athletic teams across the country. As a member of the team, Livvy will be present at virtual team bonding events, and will be present at practices, games, team dinners and more when it is safe to do so.

A look at the 2021 schedule
Due to the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, game dates, times and opponents are subject to change. Any updates to the schedule will be reflected on this page as well as via the official UMass women's lacrosse social media accounts.

In accordance with UMass' COVID-19 protocols, all home games will be closed to spectators this season. The decision was made following consultation with local public health and university officials and in accordance with the Governor's Executive Order prohibiting large capacity venues from opening to the public.
