March 02, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 22 Massachusetts women's lacrosse team, playing its second game in three days, found itself up against one of the nation's top teams in No. 11 Boston College on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Eagles on the road at Fish Field House, 19-7.
Haley Connaughton led the Minutewomen with a three-point day on two goals and two assists, while Stephanie Croke (two goals), Brinley Anderson, Kelly Marra and Olivia Muscella also found the back of the net for the visitors. Kaitlyn Cerasi had a goal, three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Lauren Hiller made nine saves in goal before giving way to Bridgette Wall late in the game.
Boston College, which dictated the flow of the game due in part to a 22-6 advantage in draw controls, including 10 from Charlotte North, was led by Jenn Medjid (five goals, one assist), Caitlyn Mossman (one goal, four assists) and Belle Smith (three goals, one assist) on the offensive end of the field while Courtney Weeks had a team-high four groundballs. Rachel Hall made nine saves for the Eagles.
Massachusetts struck in front, 4-2, via a three-goal run early on. Three Minutewomen shared in the run as Connaughton, Croke and Marra each put in one goal, capped by Croke's tally with 19 minutes, 22 seconds to play in the frame.
The Eagles earned a consistent possession advantage over the remainder of the half through strong play on draw controls, where BC won 14 of the 19 taken in the frame. The extra possessions resulted in Boston College's closure of the half with 10 of the final 12 tallies, including seven of the final eight after Massachusetts knotted the game at 5-5.
After the teams traded turnovers throughout the first several minutes of the second half, Boston College put its foot on the gas with five straight goals in an eight-minute stretch to take a commanding lead with 13 minutes to play, with two of those strikes coming from Medjid.
UMass continued to battle, though, looking to capitalize on its scoring opportunities, but Hall was there to slam the door with seven second half saves.
Massachusetts returns to action with a Sun., March 7 game at UConn. The first draw control will be at 1 p.m.
